PCM - would a new one affect fuel economy?

Question?

24.475 gal - $42.02 - 320.4 miles = "A Small Fortune"

(13.09 mpg) - all highway yesterday Drove to Mankato for Easter Dinner and then to another family members house. No city driving computed.

If Ford could change the PCM, would that get me normal fuel economy?

Does anyone have any more thoughts on fuel economy fix?

Dealer will do nothing. Their computer is right. I get 20 mpg on the highway and 16 in the city. If their computer reads this, how can I go about getting them to look into this matter further without telling me there is no problem and no codes for fuel are coming up.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated...

Don't know. I did see a post on here a day or so ago about how to reprogram it. Something about un-hooking the battery and running the headlights to use up what was left over and so on....if you need more I can post it bvut might work......I think you have tried it all.

Unfortunately, my fuel economy is so unconsistant, I'm really unsure of if the Borla helped or not. I know that on my last tank I got 13.07. Most of that was Hwy. However, I know that I jumped on it a few times.

I suppose that I should take a trip and set the cruise at 70 and see what I get without getting on it.

Can you find this thread for me? I would be willing to try anything at this time.

Thanx.

You unhook the battery while leaving the head lights on to drain residual power. Let it go for 10-15 minutes. Come back and hook the battery back up, turn the truck on and let it idle for 10 minutes. That will allow it to "learn" the new mods. Then take it out for a 15-20 minute spin to "learn" a little of your driving habbits. Nothing much to it.

My 2003 FX4 5.4 gets around13's on the highway also. The bed tonno cover and the 0W-20 helped abit, went from 12's to high 13's-14 on highway flat with cruise set at 73

WOW!

There is someone else that is getting the poor fuel economy. I didn't think there was. Do you do a lot of city driving. Or is that just a highway trip?

FX4 5.4 and I am getting 12-14 pretty much anywhere I go. That is a far cry from the 9 mpg you were talking about getting earlier. If your getting 16-20, it's not going to get any better.

Mine is 37 gallons, 420-480 miles. I live in the foothills of San Diego county and everywhere I go has hills which is why mine is so bad, I think. Maybee running 80 doesn't help much either.

Quit bitchen, our reg unleaded gas average price is $2.25 a gallon for 87. Saw $2.21 yesterday and felt like I was getting a deal. Costs me $80 to fill up.

I'm not bitchen, first of all. Fuel prices I can't control, but I can comment on the fuel economy.

The 16-20 is what the dealer said my truck was getting according to the computer: 16 city / 20 highway.

I'm not getting that. I'm not sure what you've read in these posts. But to bring you up to speed, I'm getting 13.06 on strickly highway at 70-75. I am still getting 8-10 in the city. I have something to complain about and I think most members on this forum would agree with me.

The bitchen comment was geared towards "24.475 gal - $42.02 - 320.4 miles = "A Small Fortune" I understand you can't controll the gas prices but if you think that is a small fortune, you ought to try driving that thing around this neck of the woods.

I notice that in your avatar it is sitting in snow. Does your mileage change between driving in snow in 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive when the roads are dry?

I've read most of your posts on this subject and do agree 8-10 in the city is ridiculous unless your running around in 4H all the time. If the truck is actualy burning that kind of gas, you would think it would smell and have a horrible smog problem. Have you ever followed a vehicle with a big motor that burns lots of gas, it smells alot. Just my observations. All that gas has to be making fumes which have to be smelled somewhere down the line.

Another thing that comes to mind, how long do you warm up the truck? If it's sitting around idling 20 minutes every morning then it would make a little more sense.

What was there explanation as to why there computer is 7 miles to the gallon off? Seems like quite a difference for them to just blow you off and act like your crazy.

I get the same mileage city and highway whether i'm towing 2,000 pounds worth of boat or not towing anything at all.

I would think re-programing your current PCM would make more of a difference than just swapping it out. Maybee some code is messed up and it is not being noticed. Have you asked any of the chip programmers about this subject? Seems like they might know a little more about bad PCM's and there affects on your mileage than all of us who don't have the problem. I have been around the exact same PCM on high performance mercury outboards and they either work or they don't. The only thing that could be half assed and work would be the script (tune) on your chip. Not saying that having to program your chip should lay on your shoulders, just that it might fix the problem. You've had so many problems with it that I don't blame you for being pissed. I'd of got out of it long ago and probably never gotten back in one at this point.

The mileage in our SCrew is 13.8 at best. I have never seen it lower than 13.5 and over 14.4, usually at 13.8.

STicker Steve,

The snow is from last year. To be honest, I haven't seen any difference in my mileage with the weather. I don't let my truck warm up at all. The 7.83 mpg that I use to get, yes I had engaged 4wd a couple of times but not all of the time.

Now we should have summer mix in our gas and I still don't see any change with the fuel economy. I am still getting 13 on the highway and I was getting 12 when I would let the truck warm up and run for 20 minutes.

Do you have an idea who I would ask about the pcm as you refered to above?

As far as the fuel prices, I'm very thankful that I don't live by you. I was in Vegas two weeks ago and I know they had $2.31 and the premium was $2.70 or something like that. I would hate to see what VegasFX4Screw is getting, especially with the lift.

Anyway, not pissed at you, just clarifying the bitchen.

I've seen $2.91 along the tourist areas on the beach. Just plain crazy.

You know, at 7.83 mpg, you could be running around in a 500 hp muscle car and get the same mileage.

I haven't noticed much a difference in mileage between winter and summer blends either.

I would start off with Troyer and see what they have to say about the issues. Might even want to just put up a post on the computer chips forum.

Good luck with your problem child!
