Test Drove a Titan

Yes. I test drove a Titan this past Friday. I just wanted to see if the auto press was full of BS as they usually are, or truly onto something.

Let me just say... NOT IMPRESSED.

The interor was too car-like. Not just car-like... but like a Nissan car (if you are into that kind of thing) I have to say that I think the current Chev and Dodge interiors are nicer... more truck like. The Nissan interior seemed breakable. When the gauges and ***** and stuff feel too car-like... they feel as if they may be prone to breakage. This may not be true, but thats how it felt.

The ride was no different than my 98 and does not come close to the soon-to-arrive '04.

Acceleration seemed sluggish. The 5 sp auto may help fuel economy, but it really dilutes the engine power. Its great to have a 305 peak HP rating... but having the extra tranny gear seems to not let you get close without giving it full throttle.

The one nice feature was the bed with the factory installed liner.

The box side storage is a real waste and looks like it will be a spot that will rust in future.

Overall, it's not a bad truck... but I don't think its any better than the Chev or Dodge and definitely no where near the Ford.

J, I do agree with you on this. While I didn't drive one, I did poke around inside one a while back. The whole interior had a cheap feel to it and the color scheme was revolting. Even the guys on the Titan Forum complain about this. The switchgear seems even flimsier than Chevy's.

You are the first to declare the Titan sluggish, however. I would think that the 5 speed would keep it in the peak power range more effectively than a 4 speed.

Thumbs down

I saw a Titan yesterday, that was enough Nissan for me.
Im no Titan, Dodge or chevy biggot, but Id buy the Dodge before the Titan. To me the truck looks plain, and the bed doesnt look porportionate to the cab.

if the peak is over 3000rpm, this tranny wont let you get there without goosing the engine... and even then will upshift sooner.

Maybe previous test drivers were really bagging the truck... but in normal stop and go (not going over 2500rpm), it was sluggish.

I think I've only seen 2 Titans on the road here in the Cincinnati area. They appear smaller in person. There are lots more F-150's running the roads.

A friend of mine has one. I think it looks goofy on the outside, I haven't had any seat time in it yet, but he seems to think it is much quicker than his 2000 Tahoe Z71, or his older Expedition was. It's no F-150.

I have seen several Titans around town and the one thing that I notice is that, as mentioned, it is out of porportion. The hood looks too short and the bed looks too long. I am sure it is not a bad truck, but by just the looks of it, it has a wierd shape to it.

Way off the topic but I sat in a 2004 GTO today and will probably test drive one soon, even though I have no interest in buying one. Although the GTO looks kind of like a stretched out Cavaliar (everyone tells me Grand Am and Grand Prix but I think it looks nothing like those 2 cars) the interior is very impressive. Just paaing that along.

Supercrew all the way. Scab will remind you too much of a chevy!

I wouldn't trade my Supercab for a Supercrew in a million years. But that's all about personal preference. I don't think the trade-in value would differ much because people are looking for different things when they shop for a truck. Personally, I like the longer bed of the SCab and the more balanced look. If I had one shy of a *****load of kids, though...I'd probably opt for the SCrew. Go on your first impression. Usually those are the best.

J-150, your comments on percieved performance are quite the opposite of the majority. Seems most people don't care for Ford's electronic throttle system in the 5.4L and the Titan is too sensitive. Magazine tests also provide a clear performance edge to the Nissan. I suspect that your test vehicle had not been broken in.

keep in mind that during magazine track tests, they are bagging the $h!t out of the truck and taking the rpm to where the power peaks. What I'm saying is that in stop and go where I did not go over 2500 rpm (spending most of the trip between 1000 and 2000 rpm) there didnt seem to be a lot of power. I'm not sure how flat the power curves are.. there just doesn't seem to be a lot at lower rpm. I think my drive was more realistic (as this is how I would normally drive) than Road & Track or whomever beating the heck out of the truck on a closed track...

All the write ups I have seen have said the Titan is a real burner

Neck and neck with the Dodge hemi

All the F150 posters have complained about the poor throttle response and several write ups say the engine feels sluggish
800 lbs increase in weight for the SCAB will do that
Plus it has that fly by wire BS

My biggest wonder is how come all these glowing magazine and newspaper writeups on the F150- dn't find the vibration problem that so many have and that also goes for Ford'd testing

What the hell changed
