XM antenna placement

Hi,

I just want to know where people have placed their antenna for a XM antenna on the 04 F-150. I remember seeing one pic where someone has ran the antenna through the cargo light. If one of you guys have placed the antenna on the cargo light how did you run wire from the antenna to the receiver. Also where did you guys put the receiver?

Circuit City charged me $45 to install mine.
They mounted the antenna in front of the cargo light on the roof (my choice, my buddy put his inside the cab on the dash at the right front corner of the windshield).
I got the XM Commander and put it in my XLT where the cigarette lighter is. I took the cig lighter out completely b/c I have another power point on the dash, and another on the rear side of the center console in the 40/20/40 split plan.

Check out my pix. I have a pic of the dash with the Commander, but not one of the antenna. There is a very strong magnet in the antenna, and it mounts securely to the top of the cab.

Ive got the Sirius tuner but they are similar in design. I put the antenna in front of the third brake light/cargo light and ran the wire through the opening for the wiring harness for the lights. Went around the headliner down behind the rear seat back where I mounted the receiver (pic in my gallery). The head unit controls the receiver. Hope this helps.

My Sirius antenna is mounted on the roof, centered in the front. It was professionally installed so I'm not entirely sure how they wired it.

As for looks..face it...the F150 is so high to begin with that any antenna of this size is not really noticeable. Can you see it on my truck, yes...does it really make a difference how the truck looks...not at all...

If you do mount is back near the brakelight, you won't see it at all...of course that means a longer wire-run, but probably worth it.

Do it yourself!!!! I did mine and it was so simple. I just unscrewed the brake/cargo light and ran the wire through.
It was easy to reach it under the headliner. Then I just ran the wire under the headliner to the driver side (Headliner does not have to be removed!!!There is plenty of room to push the wire under it).down the post... under the door sill and over the pedals into the dash. I would rate this job a 3 on a 1 to 10 scale(10 being the hardest). DONT PAY SOMEONE TO DO THIS!!. Mine was in in under 10 minutes...
Hope this helps

OMC-

One word- GETIT!!

Get it, get it, get it. I have not listened to FM or my CD player since I bought it. There are so many good channels, that I often have a hard time deciding which one to listen to. Good music and the reception is great.

Get it.

Ill second that, get it, get it, get it. I know Ive got the Sirius but they are very similar and Im loving it. You can go on long trips and never have to station search while driving. You can listen to your favorite station the hole way there and back. Its great!

I have a 2003 (I dont know about the 2004 setup) and put it under the plastic panel that covers the windshield wipers. I routed the wires through the firewall and the antenna is hidden as plastic is invisible to the signal. Let me know if you would like more detail and I can give you a call. I also hid all the wires, including power, behind the dash using a radio shack cig lighter adaptor.

Again, let me know if you want more detail and I'll give you a call.

My XM antenna is front center above the windshield, wire run through the the hood and around the windshield moulding. Advantage of this is you dont' have to pull down the roof liner to run the line.

See my gallery for pics if you are interested.

Go with the head unit, I didn't but likely should have. The only advantage of the FM modulated unit is the remote, but alot of after market head units have those now to.

Whatever you do GET IT, it is great.

OMC,
That is going to have to be your choice. There are a lot of ways to go. Pioneer, Alpine and Sony all have XM ready decks, and like you said, Alpine has one with it installed in the unit already. Kenwood and Clarion have units that are Sirius ready, and Kenwwod is giving you the Sirius tuner free. All you have to buy is the antenna. Then you have all the add-on tuners, which you have to find a place to mount the controller. Do the research and buy what fits your needs best.
