Why did Ford wait so long?

I wonder why Ford waited so long to build
a nice truck like the new '04 F-150's. You
can't tell me that they couldn't have built
this truck 5 years ago. I think it is at least
this much behind time. They have been
f!#@ing around and the only thing that
saved them from being blown by was the
fugly GMC and cheby models and the cheapo
unreliable dodge boy models. They could
have been miles ahead if they had done
something like this sooner. I realize they
still have the best selling model, but they
could have opened the gap even farther.

So, you're implying that the past models of F-150s (including mine) are not worthy of bearing the blue oval?

Competition dictates alot. When your the no. 1 selling truck you can do it at your own convenience. It is a shame it took from '94 to '04 for them to put a decent frame back under the F150. For 10 years it was almost like they had a truck-like body sitting on a wimpy car frame..

It was pretty tho.

I thought I was gonna have to buy a Super Duty.

Thanks Mupper for a decent answer to
my question. To all the other smarta$$
replies, all I was asking is don't you think
Ford could have built a better truck sooner
than they did? This truck is so much better
than the previous style, it's not even close.
I think the japs are putting the heat on
Ford. But thanks for all the intelligent
answers guys. I was just trying to get a
conversation on this topic. I guess I got
some answers, albeit some bone-head ones.

Lighten up Sporto, or this place is really going to suck for you. Just having a little fun, man. I did think it was a pretty stupid question though.

Personally, if I were you, I'd listen to what Tuff is saying here. Long story short, all of the 'smarta$$' replies (as you put it) were simple 'jabs' at you. After a series of 50+ posts, I would've figured that you'd know the atmosphere around here. Sure, it's serious at times but, just about every thread on our boards drift into meaningless conversation at some point in time. Your thread drifted earlier than others.

would you have paid this much for a truck 5 years ago?

It wasn't too long ago that 4 door half-tons didnt exist.

It wasn't much more before that where regular cabs still outsold supercabs

and not much before that more trucks were sold without AC than with.

Question: how long have you owned trucks and secondly do you even use them as trucks?

All Ford has done is created a car with a 6 foot bed on the back because this is where the market ended up versus 10 years ago.
