squeaky belts?

Do anyone elses belts make a high pitched squeaking noise? Mine do. I thought it was due to the cold temps but they are still doing it and it is starting to warm up. I friend asked me "is this a new truck?" I said yes and he said "It doesn't sound new" I guess I have to get it checked out.

I have a squeak in the back of the supercab. Mine sounds alot like styrofoam against leather. Is this what your squeak sounds like? I reclined the passenger seat and tried pulling and pushing on the back rests in the back but didn't make a difference. I don't know what else there is back there that could be making that noise.

it might be the upper seat belt buckle rubbing on the leather. i heard that in my truck and it was annoying.

You might also try a can of silicone spray. You can find it at the parts store. That will stop noisy belts too. I've used it several times on older cars. Spray it on the inside of the belt with the engine running. Spray outside as well.

I tried cleaning the belts with soapy water but it would squeak every time I touched it with the damp rag. It seems to be that cold/damp mornings are the worst. Maybe the silicone spray will work.

[edit - oops sorry I originally got to this thread by searching, now i see this is a 2004 thread....]

how does the silicone spray work? I still don't understand what causes the squeak...is it the side of the belt rubbing against something? The silicone somehow lubricates without causing slip?

My '94 V8 5.0L makes a belt sounding squeak when idling (not all the time but most days) - seems to go away or get quiter while accelerating (unless its 'cos I just cannot hear it then!) but comes back again idling or coasting.

But the serp belt seems tight.

Someone told me to sprawy wd40 (just a little bit) to see if noise changes - does this sound good to youse?

cheers-
Rob

The belt won't slip with the silicon spray. Try it. I've used it mainly for 'noisy' belts, not necessarily squeaking. Hard to describe the sound, but after spraying you can barely hear it or not at all. It's worked well for me.

Try a Belt Dressing like Pyroil made by Valvoline. Stopped the squeaky belt on my 04' Lariat. I got it at Kragens. See the link
