Cool Taildragger, thanks. That's about what I expected you'd say.

At the end of the day, the mpg isn't that big a deal (these are still trucks, after all) as long as you enjoy the drive. The high mpg you had is a nice bonus, though!

With 1000 miles on my 5.4 scab I'm averaging 12-14 mpg doing about half city and half highway driving . What should pee us all off is the "fuel consumption guide" on the window stickers. I'm not sure about American sold trucks but in Canada mine say's "17 mpg city and 24 highway"!
I'd like to know how they figure that one out?

Doolittle,
Likely the sticker on the vehicles sold in Canada reflect Imperial Gallons. We have to be careful making distinctions betwen US Gallons and Imperial Gallons. This figures in this thread have been in the context of the US Gallon.

1 Imperial Gallon = 1.2009 US Gallons

14 us gal = 16.81 Imperial Gallons
18 us gal = 21.62 imp gal

(Conversely, 1 US Gal = .83268 Imperial gal).

Do American trucks have the same size fuel tank I wonder?
Mine says it has a 35.7 gal or 135 litres tank.
The other day I paid $.86 a litre here and with a quarter tank left it still cost me $87cdn!!
They must rate the consumption going 30mph downhill with no headwind.
In my opinion their claims are very misleading but the 5.4 still gets better mpg than my old 5.7 silverado.

What octane/grade fuel is everyone using?

I use 87 and live in the Northeast. It should make no significant difference in fuel efficiency.

Doolittle, I believe its a standard 26 gallon tank.

The fuel tank size depends on the configuration:
26 gal: 126" W.B. on Reg. Cab and 133" W.B. on SCab
27 gal: 144.5" W.B.
30 gal: SuperCrew
35.7 gal: optional tank for Reg. Cab and SCab 4x4

There are so many variables that affect real world fuel consumption that it can be discussed at great length without real resolution...the bottom line is that no matter what we're getting, we want it to be better., especially with the way fuel prices keep going up with no end in sight.

Smile last road trip mpg

at 5000 miles i took a 350 mile trip with my 5.4 supercab ran air about 50% of the trip in E Texas . 87 octane 19.4 mpg. No trip computer divided miles by gallons at the pump.. Averasge about 65 mph and I am light on the peddle from a stop. Could not be happier....I have a 35.7 gallon tank and with a mix of city and hwy i can go over 500 miles before I even think about refueling.

If I was worried about fuel economy, I'd drive a Honda Civic.

All gasoline is not created equal. I get about 2 miles/gal. less on the reformulated gas I buy around the big city than I do with the regular gas bought away from the city.
The best I've gotten is 17.2 on a calm day, all highway at 70-80mph speeds. Thats better than I ever expected from anything with a 4x4 sticker on the side of it.

Paglaser...that means you're in 3rd gear most of the trip. The tranny doesn't shift to OD (4th gear) until 45mph. Perhaps you do what I often do...obtain a shift to 4th, then back off gently to maintain 4th at less than 45mph. Under constant, light demand, I can lug to about 1100rpm.
