Wondering if anybody STILL smells the antifreeze smell? My wife and I could smell it in our SuperCrew Lariat from day 1 and we have had the truck about 2 months now.

I marked the level of coolant in the overflow bottle to see if there has been any usage or leakage, but the level has remained about the same.

Funny thing is, I don't really get the smell coming from the vents or from around the heater core/airbox area under the dash. Where the smell seems to come from is the grease used in the seat tracks!! The smell is VERY strong right in this area. Would any of you check your trucks and see if you think the same thing?

This "problem" is driving me nuts and I was ready to take the truck into the dealer, but I'm wondering if it is simply the grease. I can live with and/or fix that.

Thanks,
Mike

I think you guys have been sniffing the over-flow tank too much.

I concure with Mike (mandm1). In my Lariat Screw I smell the 'burnt maple syrup' smell inside the cab. Seems to go away quickly, but I have to admit, I'm a little concerned.

The next time I'm out, I'll give the seat tracks a whiff.

the system being the radiator and all the hoses through which the anti-freeze travels.
When working properly, your cooling system is pressurized, and there should be no "dripping"

Everyone's pretty much had a funky smell for the first few thousand miles. Back in November, when I got it, this issue came up. And I believe it was determined that it was parts of the engine that had a protectant oil of some kind on them because they were new parts, and that it was the oil burning off.

You could smell it more when you got out of the truck after you turned it off and walked near it. And since your anti-freeze levels aren't dipping, I would say that this is the same thing.

It will go away. Every now and then I'll catch a brief hint of it when I go by a certain area. But it's nothing to worry about unless you're seeing green puddles.

never got a chance to smell any antifreeze, i found the leak first. i usually wash under the hood when i wash the truck and i noticed yellow drops all over the passenger side of the engine compartment. at first i just washed it off and figured it was something catching in the fan and spraying all over. wasnt thingking of fords new color of antifreeze. the second time i searched for a leak. on the front of the engine just above the passenger valve cover is a heater hose connection. the clamp on the hose was not holding all the time. so i added my own hose clamp. dont feel as though something that small needed to go to the dealer. although ive seen people go for smaller stuff. on this board.

Wink Antifreeze Smell

I have had my FX4 for 4 weeks (built 06/04) and never noticed this smell, but my wife has mentioned a strong interior smell (that I presumed was the leather).

I went outside and I am sure that my neighbors and kids think I am insane after they saw me trying to sniff the grease on the seat tracks!

I don't smell anything and I haven't seen any golden drips yet. Guess I am not much help on this one, but I thought it was funny seeing the expression on my kids' faces when they saw me trying to jam my big head underneath the back of the driver's seat!

it could be the gases still escaping from the plastics in the cabin like the dash, etc. to give that pretrolium type smell

Definitely not a plastic smell. Anit-freeze has a burn maple syrup smell when it gets hot or burnt. Very distinctive.

I had a heater core blow all over my feet in my friends Duster back in HS. Didn't get burn too bad, thank God. But I will never forget that smell.

I am not saying a PLASTIC smell... it could be the smell of the gas escaping the plastics... afterall ethylene glycol (main ingredient in anti-freeze) is used to make plastics, believe it or not...

read the "uses" of EG here:
