Still in for service
Still in for service
It's now Wednesday, 4:55 PM. My truck has been in for service since about 4:00 PM on Monday.
I've detailed some of my service experience on my FX4 in this thread -> https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...5&pagenumber=3
They called today to say it was ready for pick up. I got there, turned in my rental car (which I thankfully didn't have to pay for except for gas), and prepared to be on my way. Well, I didn't even make it out of their lot. The CEL (check engine light) came on again. So, it's staying there for another day because the techs that were looking at it were gone for the day. Back to the rental car I go! Ugh.
They still wouldn't give me any specific codes. Here is what the initial service report that I have says:
EEC TEST. PINPOINT TEST FUEL PRESSURE TEST REPROGRAM PCM
PER SSM 17483 CC 28 BP RECAL P2106
The first line is pretty obvious. What does the second line mean?

Hey Mike, the ssm means Special Service Message #.cc is the causual part #of the failing part.bp means base part # which in your case was the EEC-5 processor which they reprogrammed. If you wait a few minutes I can get the definition of code p2106,which I believe is for the electronic throttle body assymbly.
Yes MIke it is for the electronic throttle body.I work at a Lincoln Mercury dealership in Rich.Va.I have seen this code on Lincoln LS.It could be a simple obstruction or it could need a throttle body assymbly,or a bad coil on plug. One LS at work at 2 bad coils that was causing code p2106.The new "drive by wire"system is new to the Ford vehicles in the USA and they still have some glitches.Hope this helps and good luck.
Update
Well, I got my truck back yesterday afternoon, but it's still not entirely fixed. The service tech at the dealer spent half the day on the phone with Ford about this problem. They told me that the PCM reprogram that they did on Wednesday afternoon will be enough to get me by until the next version of the PCM software becomes available. That's expected to happen in 2-3 weeks, because Ford is working on it now.
I got another invoice from them when I picked up my truck yesterday. Here's what the service labor section says:
E29 CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON
.
FORD ENGINEERING INVESTIGATING
NO FIX AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME WAIT FOR A PCM CALIBRATION UPDATE
Neither one of the lights (CEL or wrench) is actually on any more. I asked the service tech what should I do if it comes on again, but seems to run fine. Response was just continue to drive it as it won't hurt anything. How about if one or both lights come on, and it starts running rough again? Response - that won't happen with the PCM update that they put in on Wednesday afternoon.
I am still kind of concerned. I've got the 5 year or 75,000 mile extended warranty, so I should be good. If the lights come on and anything bad happens, am I covered so I don't have a hard time getting it fixed if it's something major?

You have posted the story of MY 2004 F150! Mine has been in the shop 3 x and STILL has to go back. The light is on again and it is running rough. Other than that I LOVE my truck. It is the best! And our dealer gave us the exact same answer to this problem.
Yes, I asked them about that. They responded by saying the throttle body "is not an intricate part of the system". I have a hard time believing that since other people have had that replaced in their trucks, and it's fixed the problem. Plus, there are other trucks having no problems, and other fix attempts have failed.
To make matters worse, this morning (Sunday, 03-14-2004) while I was running some errands, the wrench light came on again. The engine was running really rough and acceleration was very erratic. I really like my truck. It appears the PCM update that they did (their temporary workaround until another update becomes available) when I had it in for service last week has not fixed it. This problem is the only thing I don't like about it, and I don't feel confident driving it anywhere.

Update
FYI, the dealership that I am having my truck serviced at (Soerens Ford, Brookfield, WI) is not the same one where I bought it. Where I bought my '04 is about 330 miles from here because we have friends of my family at that dealership (Kronlund Motors, Spooner, WI). Naturally, that distance makes it very hard to have the truck serviced where I bought it. Hence, why I'm handling it at a dealership local to my home.
Anyway, called Kronlund this morning to ask my friends up there for a "second opinion" on how to proceed with this. Sounds like the actual owner of the dealership there had the same problem with his truck that I have with mine. They replaced the throttle body on his truck (even though Ford didn't want them to), and it fixed the problem. Ford is telling people to wait for the next recalibration update of the PCM. I believe that's going to be available by or before the end of the month.
My truck ran fine with no lights appearing on the dash this morning (Monday, 03-15-2004) on the way to work. So, provided the problem doesn't get any worse, I'm going to wait for the PCM update. If that still doesn't fix it, then it's going in for a throttle body replacement.
