Question Overhead console/track vs. Moonroof...

Is having the overhead track console worth not getting the moonroof?

I'm not sure what Ford offers as add-ons for the track but I heard there are some coming that can be added and removed by the owner. They must slide on and off or something.

And I'm pretty sure you can't get both. If you get a moonnroof they have to remove the track I assume, for obvious reasons.

Thanks in advance!

it's one or the other.

It really depends on what you want. Ask yourself... you you really want the bins to hold sunglasses and garage door opener? Will you ever install a DVD?

And then ask... do you really want the sunroof.

For me, if I really wanted the sunroof, I could definitely live without the overhead storage.

I agree that it depends on your preferences. You can only get one or the other (rails or Moonroof). I initially wanted the rails until I drove a truck with them in it. I really didn't care for the bins being so close to my head so I opted for the moonroof. I like the moonroof but wife really doesn't. Women with long hair have issues with it whipping their hair around. Somehting to consider!

As for the DVD.. I have priced it out and you can get headrest mounted units and player for approximately the same price as Ford charges for theirs. Estimate range from 900 to 1500 dollars depending on options (Wireless headphones, gaming ports, etc)

Go drive trucks with both rails and moonroof. It helped me make my decision.

I agree that those add-ons aren't worth very much but what if they come out with a hands-free cell phone, or a Sat radio receiver that mounts in the track?

I guess it comes down to what Ford has planned to go in there.

But I agree that a moonroof is nice to have.

I have one in my car and use it all the time.

I have the overhead console and have never used it.

I just throw my sunglasses on the console. Its easier.

Go with the moonroof if you have the choice. I wish I had. The moonroof looks so much better and is much more practical.

Out of curiosity, how much headroom do you lose by having the moonroof in the '04? At 6'6" it matters to me as I haven't been able to sit in most vehicles with a moonroof/sunroof without the top of my head touching the roof...but in the same vehicles without the moonroof/sunroof I have had enough headroom.

Cheers.

The options for the rails are lame and way overpriced right now. In the future however, there are going to be all kinds of options including the ones mentioned above, and many more. I'm excited about what will be available once the wiring for the AUX is available.

That said, if you are a moonroof fan, they are very cool too. Anything you could snap on the rails is something you could put somewhere else too. With the moonroof you really won't miss out on anything except a cleaner and simpler installation and the advantage of being able to swap stuff onto the rails whenever you want.

You most certainly do lose headroom with the moonroof. I am 6'5 and got the overhead consoles because it felt more comfortable to me. With moonroofs, the roof is dropped to accomodate the glass and motor. I can't even fit in an explorer with a moonroof.

I would have to disagree that you loose headroom.. Atleast in the F150.. I had it in the 03 model F150 and now in the 04 SCrew. I test drove one with the rails and the thing I didn't like was that the bins on the rail seemed close to the side of my head (am 6'1"). With the moonroof, there appears to be more headroom. I do not notice the roof being any lower. Besides, the moonroof is not over the driver's seat.. it is centered on the middle.
I have NOT taken actual measurements bwtween the two versions. Just there feels to be a lot more room without the bins down the middle.
I got the moonroof for this reason

OK I think I need to eat crow. I can see where the moonroof will lower the roof little. I looked at my truck on the way home and I tend to agree with you Wolfman.. I can see where it would matter to someone as tall as you.
the bins running down the middle catch my eye and make the cab appear narrower that when it is just the moonroof

Didn't mean to me contrary Wolfman... just made me think after I posted that last msg

I am 6'5" and I have absolutely NO problems with the roof being too low with the moonroof.

I don't see how the bins reduce headroom. You can be as tall as you want, but your head would have to be 3 feet wide before it would even come close to the bins.
