Orange Wrench - Tranny Prob?

Yuck- 2,000 miles on my FX4 and tonight I got the orange wrench light on my instrument panel. I noticed it about a minute into the ride home.

I also noticed the tranny wasn't shifting right. It seemed to not want to shift from 3rd to 4th. It was like it did not want to shift into a higher gear. It also had a shudder/shake around the time it wanted to shift, I never noticed before. Always been perfectly smooth.

It did this all the way to Pizza Hut, I parked, shut it off and went inside. I came out, started it up and it was fine all the way home. No orange wrench and no shifting/shuddering problems.

Anyone else ever have this happen? Guess I'll watch it for now and see how it goes.

Ron

It should have set a code in the computer. You might want to take it to the service dept. and let them check it out.

Oh, so even though the orange wrench is gone the computer remembers the code it set off? So they might be able to see it? Is there a time limit?

Yes,If it sets a code in the computer it is there until it is erased either by the service tech. or by undoing the battery for a period of time. No time limit that Im aware of, so you can take it in at your convenience. If it doesnt set a code and the wrench light still comes on, the dealership can install a "flight recorder" to watch different parameters of the eng. all you have to do is push a button when the problem happens and it will record information so many seconds before and after the push of the button. Then the tech can download the info and hopefully find the culprit. Hope this helps.

Angry Orange Wrench

Had the same thinkg happens with about 2200 miles. I was flipping the cruise on and the wrench light came on. The tranny then began hunting for gears. Turned the engine off for about 10 seconds as speed, and restarted. Wrench went away, and has not reappeared. I have only added about 500 miles since this incident. I was puttiing on the cruise on switch, and set speed switch quickly, and thought that maybe the signals hit the computer at the same time and created a jam? Just a thought.l

You may have a sensor going bad causing the transmission to go into a "limp home" mode.
