In for service

Hey guys, I'm taking the truck in this afternoon to have a few things looked at.

1. Jell-o bed ----- Has anyone else had this looked at? If so what did dealer tell you?
2. Hood shake --- I have a bug shield, but I am going to have them look at the flex at the hood mounts.
3. Rear slider rattle ---- They acknowledged the TSB for this

If anyone has any pertinent info on the issues that you have experienced, please share so I can go in with as much ammo as possible.

Thanks

Well let’s look at this from the service writer’s perspective
1. Jell-o bed, checked bed, test drove truck. No jello found.
2. Hood shake, Hood shake caused by addition of after factory installed parts, recommend removal of bug shield. Shield removed and installed on mechanics truck for further testing. 1.5 hours non warranty billable.
3. Rear slider rattle, Rear slider looked at: no unusual rattle detected under non static position movement testing.

Of course I am just kidding, but most of my service tickets turn out this way. Good luck with it

I thought I read here that the rear slider window rattle was from the windows weather stripping rubbing against the metal frame of thr cab, on the outside.

Let us know how the rear slider rattle fix goes. This weekend I'm going to pull the rear seat and see what is back there.

I would like to hear what they say about the hood shake. I had the Ford low profile on and had to take it off.

I have the Ford low profile guard on my truck and have no hood shake at all. I wonder if it could be something else causing this?

OK, here's the scoop so far;
I spent about 1 1/2 hrs with the body shop manager and one shop worker yesterday looking over the truck.

1. Jell-o bed------I demostrated the bed shimmy by opening and closing the tailgate. Both guys noted the shake in the bed. They then inspected under the bed to make sure it was bolted on the frame tight (this is when I showed them the two bed crossmembers inside the wheel well were not in contact with frame). They were not sure if that was the problem, but the bolts were tight. They then asked me to open and close tailgate as they watched underneath. Both guys noted that the frame was shaking in unison with the bed. We then looked at a '04 SCrew and it had the same symptoms (crossmembers on this truck did contact the frame). Then I drove the SCrew while the mgr drove my truck. The SCrew had the same shake/bounce as mine. The mgr was surprised at how much the bed on my truck bounced.

2. Hood shake------I explained that the hood would pull up near the windshield at hwy speeds, and showed them the flex in the hood at the strut mounting locations. I voiced my concern that opening and closing the hood numerous times may cause the hood to develop stress cracks at the mounting locations. The mgr agreed and was concerned only with the hood mount flex and not the bugshield causing the movement while driving. Again, we looked at the SCrew and it had the same amount of flex at the hood mounts. He agreed that the hood was not reinforced properly at the mounts.

3. Rear slider rattle ----- ran out of time, but made appt with service for early next week. I will update on this after service.

On both the bed bounce and hood shake, the shop mgr said there is nothing he can do until Ford gets enough complaints and releases a fix. I had him input a new issue on a system called "Oasis" for both items. He said that the "Oasis" is a dealer connection system that Ford uses for new issues and also contains the TSB info. For you guys that are having these issues, have your dealer look at them and relay the info to Ford. Maybe we can get enough complaints logged and Ford will release a statement or (holding my breath) a fix. If you want, I will post word for word what the shop mgr input to the system. Let me know.
Sorry for the long post

Thanks for the info.
I have the FX4 Scab, but do not have the bed shake problem. I am surprised they said the frame was shaking.
As for the this problem and the hood shake it seems very hit or miss as to who does and doesn't have the problem.
Hopefully we will find out something soon.

I have an 04 Scab lariat...I am not having any of these problems. I have tried to find the bed shake...and it is not doing it...No hood vibration and I have the Ford bug shield installed plus the billet grill. I wonder if it is a manufacturing issue with the KS plant...

just curious

My KC truck has none of these issues.

I'm curious why anybody would think it was unusual if the bed shook when you open and close the tailgate. How much shaking are we talking about here? Is the shaking dampened immediately or does it continue to move for a few seconds?

Where are the Supercabs built? and where are the Supercrews built?

Cause I ordered a Supercrew Lariat 4X4 and Iam wondering if I might run into the same problem?

My bed shakes to the point that it throws you to the side (at freeway speeds), now that is hitting an extreme bump but it also does it driving on the secondary roads just not as bad. Mine was an early build (in July 03 I believe) in Norfolk (4x4 Lariat Scab). The hood vibration is also at highway speeds.
