Crack in Leather seats?

Anybody have any cracks appear in their new leather seats?

1500 miles on it and all ready a crack in the seat. I'm going to call the dealer today and see what they can do about it.

Wow... sounds like there are some serious issues with quality on the seating surfaces... A company called LEER (maybe LEAR) makes the entire interior, including overhead systems... Sounds like someone needs to drop the hammer on the QC guys to keep this from happening in future builds.

Correct me if I am wrong but it is my understanding that the bolster on the “leather” seats of the 04 is vinyl, not leather. The area of the seat where Bigsherm77’s is deteriorating is vinyl. Not that this changes the situation but it may be there is some sort of vinyl failure and not a problem with the leather, at least at this point.

The area that's cracked on Bigsherm77's seat is leather. The "side" area just below the cracks is "Premium Vinyl."

Really? I thought that area of the seat was vinyl (where mine is cracked) I just called it leather because I can't tell a difference anyway.

Bigdog:

I do not think you are correct but if you have some definitive info..... We have been over this on the board and I think it was discussed / determined that only the patches under you butt & back are real leather - the sides are vinyl. I recall a post mentioning that the reason for this (besides cutting cuts) was to help avoid exactly what Bigsherm77 is experiencing.

I know on my seat there is a definite difference between the grain on the sides (the area failing on Bigsherm77’s) and the patch in the middle of the seat.

But either way, one would hope for better longevity than 11K miles.

You can feel the diffenence when you run your hand over the two. The vinyl will feel more grippy. The headrest is vinyl whereas the part right under the headrest is leather. The picture bigsherm had was leather where the cracks were.

the bolster areas and the center section of the front seats are leather, but in a supercrew rear seat, its just the center piece thats leather. In a super cab, the entire rear seat is vinyl.

I think there has been a lot of misconception about what is leather vs. vinyl. It seemed to have started in this thread:
"cheap seats", in which kidtriton illustratively pointed out that the "leather trimmed" back seats in the Lariat Supercrews are not all leather, but just the rectangular surfaces he outlined (while all Supercabs and FX4 Supercrews rears seat surfaces are all vinyl).
Many people seem to recall that thread and believe that the same limited leather trim area also applied to the front seats.

Here is a later thread where the debate arose once again: Do you have "Tan" leather ? Then read this ! . Worth noting from this thread is the following post by Scott99:

A few weeks back I was at a Ford Market Research Group and spoke with one of the Ford engineers about the leather in the 04 Lariat Screw. He did confirm, that in the back seat only the four small squares are actually real leather. He also informed me, that the front seats are almost all real leather. I specifically asked him about the panels either side, in front of, and above the four main panels (on the front seat). He said that everything on the front seat was real leather except for the headrest and the rear panels.

Another engineer said that they use the vinyl for durability and the ease of cleaning.

Scott
Hopefully, that will help clarify the "leather content" issue.
Supercab rear seat: all vinyl
FX4 SuperCrew rear seat: all vinyl
Lariat Supercrew rear seat: leather "patches", rest is vinyl
Front seats: seating area and front of seat back= leather; headrest and back of seat back=vinyl

Sorry for the long post.

The engineer did not mention that the sides of the front seats just above the lumbar **** which also extends around the front of the seat is not leather, at least not on the FX4 sport captain's chairs.

Bigsherm's seats look almost as bad as my leather Lariat seats do NOW, except I've had mine since late '97 and been running my butt over the side bolster the whole time.

Treating and cleaning the seats all the time helps, but it seems nothing short of akwardly getting in/out of the seat will stop it from happening completely. You would look like a circus clown if you did that all the time.

If I was Bigsherm, I'd be pissed, it's WAAAAY too early for that to be happening. And he's an early adopter, one of those guys who posts all the time and has been very helpful on this forum; Ford should take care of his problem.
