KTNC,

Thanks. I seriously considered a black FX4 grill instead of the xlt (bar vs. honeycomb). I'm 99% sure all of the 2004 models grills are "interchangeable".
I know that Wolfman064 was considering getting the bar grill for his. As a matter of fact, Wolfman is the one who "planted the seed" for me to switch my grill out. Wolfman...are you out there?

All the grills are interchangeable. Unfortunately you can not get just the insert or the surround. Also the lower opening is the same for all as far as I know.
I changed from the FX4 to the XLT back in October.

I don't have my truck yet, but have been seriously considering turning my Lariat grille black. But, I just figured I'd paint it instead of swapping it out altogether. But, getting rid of that chrome border ... hmmm ... now I may have to replace the whole thing as you did. That, or just leave it alone.

I also plan to go with a black emblem. Great minds think alike!

Thanks for the pics JohnAndDar! That really helps with the visualization aspect of the mod.

I'd like to see some pictures, if you can... I've got an FX4 and I'd like to see what it lookes like.

Actually the front looks just like an XLT. Painted surround with honey comb black insert.
If you look at the pictures of JohnandDar, the only difference is the bumper of mine is painted the same color as the rest of the truck.

Hey John, sorry it took me so long to see this thread! Love the pics of your new grill, the black honeycomb and black surround are great looking. I have been flipping between doing two things to the grill.

First, swapping out my Lariat chrome grill (same one as JohnandDars, we have the same truck from the front doors up) with a black FX4 grill. The second idea I had is when I saw the new 05 KR - taking the bars of the FX4 and painting them beige. I am leaning towards the second option, but what has slowed me so far is just finding time to price the options out. John, you ordered your through Ford parts I presume? I would love to get the additional info you said you had, and I will email you through your profile as you had mentioned.

That definitely looks great!

Well, thanks to some help from JohnAndDar, I went ahead and ordered a black FX4 grill for my two-tone Lariat. I really think the front end will look great, because I am not big on the chrome surround of the honeycomb. As I wont be adding any chrome to the front end, it will look better with black. If I had a truck like Bigsherms or Brewmasters (black monotone) I would definitely keep the chrome surround...

In any event, I will post pics when I install it

How much for the FX4 grille? Plus S&H? And from whom did you buy it?

4L3Z 8200-BAL Bar Style Grille (Color Code UA) STX

This is for black. You can email their sales guy with the part number and he could provide you with additional color choices. fordpartsnetwork.com came highly recommended to me by JohnAndDar, and I have also ordered parts from them for my old Sport Trac. You will not find a link to it on their website, you must email them.

That looks much nicer! I would have done the same thing if I owned an '04.

I like the KR grill for the new body style...looks to me like its going to be the FX4 grill in Chrome....I have that planned for my Lariat when it comes out.

Looking at FPN's site they list a 'Bar stlye chrome grill' for $182. I am assuming this is the chrome surrond and black inner grill.

I am waiting/hoping for a full chrome FX4 style grill to see what they would like against a mono-black truck.

Also, the King has the outer chrome ring, but the inner plastic is more Lariatish in color.
