Thanks for all the replies. My suspicions are confirmed...(1)General tires may be considered a 'lesser' brand (I believe they have something to do with the ride/suspension dynamics that cause the bed shake I've discussed on 2 other threads) and (2) Goodyear Wrangler ATs are great tires...OH, I forgot to mention that the tires I was so pleased with on the '97 were Wrangler ATs. And, yeah, Michelins are great too.

I just made an appointment with Ford service to address two concerns, rear sliding window rattle and deteriorating ride/ suspension rumble at 25-45 over mildly rough road, I also suspect it has something to do with the cheap Generals, I am going to try my best to have them change out the tires....

Anybody have luck with the rear window rattle being fixed at the dealer???

4X4 Super Crew XLT built at KC.
17" Generals.
I had General 550TR's on my 94 3/4ton GMC 4x4, they were OK, but not great. Had the chunking issue also. Little bits coming off. Replaced them with BFG's.
I don't think the Generals are the Best, but are not the worst either.
Will definetly replace them with something better when they get thin.

My FX4 Screw came with Generals on the 17 inch wheels. I only put a couple hundred miles on them before I upgraded. You can put 285's on the stock rim no problem. That's what I put on mine. I got a 70.00 credit for each tire from Discount tire.

285s - does that require getting the speedometer recalibrated?

Yes if you want your speedo to be be 100% accurate (if that's possible). I believe my speedo is off maybe 1-2mph at 65mph.

I dont think 4X4,s come with the same STYLE of tire as the 4X2,s regardless of brand. I was only speaking of 4X2 trucks. RW

GOODBYE GENERAL...today I traded the wimpy OEM Generals for slightly larger (P265-31.65 inch) Wild Country XTXs. Those of you in the 7-state NW part of the U.S. will recognize the brand (from Schwab Tire Co.). Actually, the tires are made by BFA, a Kelly brand offshoot of Goodyear. I am now enjoying a 50,000+ mile premium tire with a square-shouldered aggressive tread, larger contact patch, rated for severe snow, and quiet, smooth road characteristics. The swap didn't cure the bed shake issue, but I feel more secure and confident (as well as legal in the snow under Oregon law when traction devices are required) with these new tires. GOODBYE GENERAL.
