Distorted Windshield Resolved

I recently posted about my distorted windshield, and wondered whether I should have the dealer replace it, out of fear that they'd screw something else up, and the that new ws would be no better than the old.

Well, the dealer replaced it, the new one is vastly better (though not perfect), and the guys who did the job did a pretty good job. They left dirt on the inside of the truck, and did not seat the left side of the plastic trim that resides between the hood and the windshield, but this stuff is to be expected.

I'm very happy with the new windshield.

It is really amazing how much a windshield gets pitted in how short a time, just from road debris and sand (I live in a desert). If money were no object, I might be tempted to replace my windshield once a year.

Bikelover,

Funny you mentioned this. I was going to post a note regarding my front window this evening. My buddy and I went to lunch this afternoon and he told me my window is distorted. I thought he was yanking my chain because he's a Chevy truck owner.

I couldn't see what he was talking about from the drivers side, so I went around to the passenger side. Sure as crap, there is a 6" x 10" wave (distortion) in the glass about 4" beneath (center) the rearview mirror.

I've put this on my list of stuff that they will be taking care of during the 3,000 mile oil change. I'm going to swing by the Service Department and show the Manager so he can order the glass ahead of time.

I would suggest others check their front windows. It is very noticeable when you park in the sun and look inside the vehicle at the window from an angle (passenger side). Check it out! NJR

The day I took it in to the dealer shop, the distorted windshield wasn't even on my list of to-dos. It really wasn't bothering me in the use of the truck, but there was a minor annoyance for me over this; it seemed that making optically clear glass should be a given in the modern age.

As I was turning to go get my loaner, the thought suddenly popped into my head, ask them to look at the ws. I said to the service writer lady, would you have the tech look at the ws? She went over and looked thru it, and said she couldn't see any distortions at all. I said, no problem, I can live with it the way it is, but I just wanted someone here to look at it and tell me what they thought. She said OK.

About two hours later I got email from the shop, giving me an update of what they were doing. On this update, it said they'd already authorized and ordered a new ws for me.

So I didn't have to push a bit, and in fact was readily willing to keep the old ws, because the small distortions weren't bothering me during driving, but the dealer replaced it without complaint.

This sort of surprises me, because of so many other issues with other vehicles I've owned over the years, issues that were REAL annoying in the daily use of the vehicle, that I had to basically make an *** out of myself demanding that they fix. Weird.

Bad Windshield

Just took delivery of my 150. First windshield was so distorted that I wouldn't take it off the lot. They readily noticed the distortions and replaced the windshield. The second windshield was better but still a huge wave right in my line of site while driving. My dealer acknowledged that the windshields do have issues (we went so far as to go from truck to truck throughout the lot). Salesman/Service guys/etc. all acknowledge they were getting dizzy from looking through the windshields but asked me to wait until Ford has so many complaints that they do something about the production quality and then have it replaced again.

My sales guy said "It's so bad I'd say it's a safety issue". I agreed and asked that they replace it again. May end up in the same situation again with no resolution in site.

Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks.

Its probably a good deal for the dealer. Ford pays them to replace your window under warranty. Your old window probably ends up at the body shop waiting to be sold/installed in a truck with a broken window. Sounds like the kind of business i would like to own. Selling and installing free windshields. Just my .02

Yes, you most likely are correct. But, this is OK with me. I'd hate to think of all that nice glass, even with distortions, just going into the trash. Better it should serve someone else well, someone who has less money, maybe a younger guy just trying to make a truck payment.

Bikelover,
Consider yourself luck. You don't know what you're missing until you live some place like here is Southeastern Oklahoma with all of the log truck and rock trucks slinging rocks all over the place.

If you want to replace your windshield once a year, nows your chance. That's not counting the paint job.

Not sure if it's the same in your state....here in FL.....they don't want you driving with cracked windshields and insurance companies can't charge you a deductible against windshield replacement. I've had 2 windshield replacements in 10 years and my rates didn't go up as a result.
As for auto inspections....only a few counties, out of 43, have them. So I guess they're saying, "You can drive the biggest piece of cr@p with bald tires, bad brakes, bad emissions - but we want you to see what you're about to run into." Go figure.
