Trade in values
trade in values are very relative---depends if you are going off MSRP or are you going closer to invoice price---they are good at getting what they need no matter what number you are trading at
I never trade my old vehicle for the new one...doing so 'clouds' the price negotiation. A common rule howerver is: Pay retail (MSRP) for the new vehicle, receive retail (hi book) for the trade or conversely, get a discount on the new vehicle, expect the trade value to decrease commensurately. It's all relative to what margin the dealer MUST receive to stay in business. The folks who wheel/deal are offset by the ones who pay MSRP (or more) and are content with a wholesale (low book) trade, i.e. if EVERYBODY bought at invoice or below, there would be fewer dealers in business.
usually, the best way to deal is to take both and say to dealer "how much do I owe you"
So they can go high on purchase and trade or go low on both but at the end of the day you still pay them the same amount.
That is the amount you negotiate and let them work out how it happens.

Exactly what I did
"I got this trade. And I see you got those rebates. And I want a truck like this one. Can you take it all and move it all around and make my final number be this?"

How did they treat me on my trade?
Can you say "stepchild'?
They didn't even want it! And it was an '01 Lariat 4x4 SCab loaded and in beautiful condition. After Carmax dropped a low number on it, I got lucky and sold it to a buddy for a fair price.
The late model used car market is not very good right now due to the aggresive rebates and finance rates on new ones.

If you go to NADA.com or Edmunds.com and get your trade in value, you can get that if you sell it on your own. It said trade in value on my 2000 xlt scab 4x4 with 106000 was 11000, high retail was 13500. I sold it for 11000. I knew I wouldn't get 11000 trade on my 04 screw 4x4. Order a truck and put your trade up for sale that day.
I got 26000 for my 02 lariat supercrew fx4 as trade in on my 04 supercab lariat 4x4. The total price of my 04 was 38085 not including taxes.
I thought 26000 was a good deal for my old one.

I got KBB trade in value (18,400) on my 01 XLT 4x4 Screw *loaded but without moonroof* with 26,000 on her. I bought using A plan on my new one as usual. I think KBB is fair on any trade in and so does my dealership. They go KBB or even a few hundred more with me whenever I trade up, which is usually every 3 yrs.
I traded a 2000 XLT 4X4 Off-Road with 78,370 mi. Dealer gave me 10,800 (KKB trade-in value 11.275). I thought I should have got more but I really wanted the 04 so I settled for it. If I had to do it over I would sell the old truck privately.
I got $24k for my '02 Lightning. I could have sold it myself for about $25k, but in Arizona, you only pay tax on the difference, so in essence, i saw more than what I would have gotten selling it myself. And the key thing here is that I paid X-plan for the '04 so, yes, i think they gave me enough.
