I shot an E-mail to the RETRAX folks last night and here is the reply I got -

“Thank you for your interest in RETRAX bed covers. The total weight for a full-size short bed is about 75 lbs. The bed cover can easily be removed if needed in less than 5 min. Everything is built out of light weight polycarbonate and tempered aluminum except for the ball bearing rollers which are steel.”

75lbs isn't bad.

I did a quick (it's still raining) measurement of the Retrax canister on my Supercrew:

12" x 12"

It leaves about 10" of space under the canister.

Access cover. Love the versatility of a soft tonneau and the clean look.

Mine ended up being about $1200 painted to match and shipped to Nebraska ($100 shipping). Quality is top notch and the hinge system is the most impressive I have ever seen on a cover.

I bought by Retrax in Aug. 2000. It's my understanding that there have been some improvements in the design since then, so I can imagine the current model is even better. I particularly like the lower profile canister of the new model.

1. Does it flutter or vibrate at highway speeds?

If you watch out of the back window, you can see some slight flutter, but no noise. You would probably have to go with a fiberglass topper to get much better. Then you lose all the benefit of the retractable top.

2. Is it fairly sturdy, does it seem like it will last 10 years or so?

Mine's 3 1/2 years old and looks and works as good as is did the day I put it on.

3. How much/little does it leak?

I have a slight leak around the tailgate, but I really need a new gate gasket. All in all, as much "dirty" cargo that I put in the bed, I'm suprised the gasket has lasted this long.

I have the leak when opening the top with a puddle of water on it at the front corners of the box.

I've carried antique furniture on rainy days and it's stayed dry, so I'm happy. I just keep things out of the corners of the bed -- that seems to be the "damper" areas.

4. How does the finish stand up? Does it still look nice and bright after months/years?

3 1/2 years old and looks brand new, with the exception of a few scratches of the painted frame fails. The lexan is really a first class material.

Ice is the biggest pain with the retractible covers. I've had a 1/4 inch of ice covering the entire cover. All I had to do was go along both edges of the cover and pound with my first to break the ice, then take a screwdriver handle and break the ice off the latch. The design of the latch is not the most "ice" friendly, but I've always had it open with a little fidgeting.

Sorry for the long post -- just wanted to relay my experiences. Bottom line -- I've been really happy with mine, and if my wife lets me get an 04 screw I'll be getting another Retrax.

Thanks.
