Rear Defrost vs. Power Slider

For those of you SuperCrew owners who live in northern climes and opted for the rear slider instead of defrost, on cold days have you had any problems with visibilty out of the rear window?

I have the Power slider and find that it defrost amazingly Fast

think its cause with the flow thru center console u have two adjustable vents and and they must beable to get the air up to the rear window well

not a problem

Oh and if you get the heat side mirror rear window could be coverd over with freezing rain and your still fine .

Talking Rear Defrost in Minnesota...

Happy to report that when the temps are low like up here, I still love my power slider. I have had NO problems with visability. Like mentioned above, those vents in the console do just fine. Haven't notice a thing.

(Well, I suppose it gets even colder up by you, Zacky. Doesn't it? Where in Canada?

alumacomp...in the Pacific Northwest "northern clime". winter fogging of the rear window is the problem, not frost or snow. I wouldn't trade my rear defogger for anything in this scenario.

I only have a 1998 F-150 with a solid window (no defrost for it), but there is hardly ever any trouble with frost, ice or snow on it.

Oh man the power slider is great. I had a manual in my 01 Screw and I hardly ever opened because it was out of reach. Now in my 04 with power that baby is open all the time. Never felt the need to have a defrost back there, that window is never fogged over unless your doing something nasty in the backseat (which by the way there is ample room for. hehe).

The power slider was the only option I missed, especially as I have the sun roof. Bummer.
So can Ford install the power slider afterwards? I have the Power Drivers seat to provide the power, can I assume that somewhere my wire harness supports the slider without it being there?
If not, is there Aftermarket help?

rainy northwest

alumacomp,

I'm up in the rainy northwest, I keep my truck outside. I do not have defrost, but instead I have the power slider.

I would not buy a truck without the power slider, its that great. I have had absolutely no issues with fogged windows.

The power slider when you open it does two things, if you have the moonroof, then you can reduce the buffeting when the moonroof is open by just opening the rear slider a little. The other is you can get a good breeze coming forward in the cab from the rear slider.

Its a winner

How does the rear slider operate? Can you open it to any position you want?

SteveV, yes, you can open it to any position which is handy for controlling airflow on the highway. I love my power slider. Since the window is vertical, frost and dew is not much of a problem. But, I also have a remote starter.

I'm also up here in the upper left-hand corner, and I've got the power slider & heated mirrors & sunroof combo. The slider is indeed great for adjusting the air flow (when the air is not full of water), and the heated mirrors are excellent at clearing themselves of fog.

I'm normally a motorcycle rider, and I put the same anti-fog compound (Zook) on the truck interior glass as I use on the inside of my helmet visor. Year-round biker types up here tend to be pretty particular about anti-fog, since it's really hard to "roll down the window" in your helmet. Zook is a great compound, (I hear skiers like it too), and since I've treated my windows, I've got no interior fogging whatsoever.

On the bike I need to refresh the treatment every couple of days during the wet season, but so far the truck's gone about 10 days without needing any more. I'm sure any reasonable optical anti-fog will work just as well.

I'm in Calgary and the rear window doesn't seem to frost up that often. I'd much rather having the sliding then the defroster. Especially now that the weather is warming up.

I have a quick question about that rear power slider.

Right now, I'm in a 04 Sport Trac, and it has that large 2 foot wide or whatever window in the back. In that I can choose to either vent the window 2 inches or put it all the way down. Also, it goes up and down, not side to side. What I'm wondering is, first of all, does the F150 power slider operate vertically or horizontal. Also, does it only have 2 settings (open and closed) or can you also vent it and/or open it to any position you desire.

Thanks in advance.

What's this frost stuff all you guys keep talking about???

Oh, yeah! I remember now...
Back many years ago...when I was a kid, we used to get frost, and an occasional falling of this strange white stuff...snow I think they called it.. No more though...not in many years.

Slider for me.

I owned two ST's (01 and 03) prior to my F150's. F150 slider works side to side and will stop in any position you desire.
