Paint

I know there have been a few discussions on the quality of paint coming from the factory, but I must admit I am a bit dissappointed at the quality (or lack thereof) of the paint on my Lariat. It seems to scratch or chip very easily. I rested my door against a rubber post very gingerly and now my paint is marred pretty badly. I have had Fords all my life and never had paint issues like this - anyone else experience anything similar?

yes, there is 1 tiny bubble in my paint and a few tiny chips. i don't care, but it is a lack of quality for sure.

My paint is fine all over... the quality seems to be as good - if not better than that on my '02 ranger... no complaints.

Wolfman...I'm curious, do your paint problems seems to be isolated to the (1) clear coat only, (2) clear coat and paint, or (3) all the above plus primer?

Like you, I had concerns about paint when I ordered based on some forum posts, but after several close inspections during washing/polishing it appears I have a flawless paint job (two-tone XLT Screw built week of Oct. 6).

My '97 F150 has badly deteriorating paint on horizontal surfaces, i.e. hood and roof...paint looks like a dried lake bed, but primer is OK.

Keep us posted.

1100 miles, Southeastern Michigan Roads (CRAP), it was perfect the day I picked it up and it still is. No quality complaints from me at this point.

The only thing I have noticed (so far) is a small area along a door edge that looks like the red did not cover completely, very un-noticeable. And one very small scratch on the passenger door. Almost undetectable.

But then again, my eyes suck and maybe I'm missing a lot

That reminds me. Has everyone been getting their touch-up paint mailed to them? And how long does it usually take? I believe someone mentioned it it a post. Alos, if you have a two tone, are they sending both colors?

The paint on my white Screw Lariat is outstanding. Believe me, I've gone over every sq in of this vehicle looking for flaws. At 6k miles, the only paint problems I have were caused by road debris. Just a few little chips here and there. I'd say this paint is the best I've ever seen on any mass-produced vehicle.

Mine has two clearcoat bubbles, fortunately, they are in hard to notice places. One near the very bottom of the tailgate and one near the bottom of the passenger rear door. Overall I am not disappointed. The paint did have a unsmooth texture until I did the two step polish/wax treatment but now I am fine with it.

It doesn’t matter where you start from, it’s where you finish..

Good question. I have noticed problems in both. At first, it seemed to me perhaps the reason my paint was so easily chipping was from a thin clear coat finish, or a bad clear coat, but I have chipping straight through to bare metal. I must admit, I am really disappointed in it, and what makes me more mad is the thought that to fix it, I need to have my whole passenger door replaced.....

I've seen two trucks, a lariat and an fx4 in the showroom at different times and both had paint flaws, mainly in the two tone, i didn't have the time to check it for smudges or bubbles, but each truck had either a portion of the lower grey missing or the seperation line from grey to color isnt straight, $40Grand it is not

I assure you that no paint is perfect... it may be in the eyes of the beholder but, there are issues with just about any machine applied paint process.

Plus, once the dealership recieves it and starts cleaning it up with all their 'quality' products (ha ha ha), you'll have swirls and spider marks without question.

The real trick is learning how to deal with these flaws (besides having them repainted) so that they don't drive you crazy.

Amen! I picked up my truck on 12/26. So far I found 4 flaws in the paint.

1. What looks to be a black dot about a foot below the right rear passenger door handle. Noticeable.

2. The paint on the edge of the front passenger door (right below the window) must have been nicked prior to the clearcoat. Very noticeable.

3. The inside edge of the right front fender where the grill and hood meet looks as if they started to run out of paint. Not too noticeable.

4. The front edge of the left rear door frame looks as though it was starting to rust prior to painting.

I would have to agree with Rockpick

Of the four listed #2 is the one that upsets me the most. I asked the Dealer who does their body work an intend to stop there and view the work they do before I make a decision.

Any chance of you guys that have paint problems posting some good quality digital pic's so the rest of us can see what you are really talking about?

I've been over mine with a fine-tooth comb and the paint (above and below) is flawless.

Some good pic's would help alot.
