Ford's Bug deflector

Installed my bug deflector this evening and was finishing up with the clips for the outboard "wings" of the deflector. Is there a trick to push the clips on the hood without destroying the paint even with the little plastic pad? The little pictures for the install are confusing; another pad goes between the clip and the bug shield, right? The picture looks like it is on the outside away from the shield. Your help for this "old" and "confused" man would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yup...had the same problem. Then I recalled an old "honeymoon" remedy...petroleum jelly.

Angry Cost

I called my saleman today and he told be that is would cost me 77.99 for a bug deflector. That seems a little expensive to me.

Will K-Y Jelly do as well :=)
Between stupid Ford instructions and ridiculous clips for the bug guard and trying to buy the truck when the rebates were authorized, saving some of the Jell for placement and removal of something up my butt.
Will try your advice tomorrow in the light. Thanks

The "honeymoon" was a complete success; I should have thought of that but it's been so loooonnnnnng ago :=) and we didn't have Pet. jelly back then so we used....
But getting back on track, the shield is on and looks great. Thanks.

Bug Deflector 2003 HD

Just picked up my first paint chip on the hood, and was considering adding a bug deflector. All the horror stories I've read here, have me reconsidering. Any acceptable solution found to the "paint friendly" deflector problem?

I had no trouble putting the clear plastic tape on the hood and then the clip with no damage. Once I got it started, used a rubber mallet to get it the rest of the way on. No paint damage whatsoever.

No damage here (with the Ford bug deflector), no trouble either.
