any thoughts on how the 2004 tows 8000#

I am in the market and want to know how the new 5.4 tows. My 97 4.6 sucks the gas with a 7000# load. Has anyone got data?

Expect the same fuel mileage towing 8000 pounds with any gas engine. If you plan to do it regularly, then you should look at turbo diesels.

that said, the turbo diesels bump you up to the F-250 at least. maybe you should just get a sweet F-450 and you won't have any problems...

oh well.. i want the new truck and the mileage. i want it all. if anyone trys it.. let me know

'01's wife here.

I like our tow rig.

The '01 L will tow 8500+lbs like it is nothing (with Expedition wheels and tires, a weight distribution hitch and trailer brake controller), and at sane speeds will average over 11mpg doing it. Plus, you can keep up with anything on the road. This is over 580 mountainous miles from sea level to 7400ft.

Towing 7500lbs over the same route, she averaged 12-13mpg.

An excess of power (especially torque) does have its advantages.

I think the '04 F150 should tow it just fine. However, I would still use a weight distribution hitch. I would image that tow mileage would be around 9-10mpg. This will still be worlds above the GM 8.1L big block which averages about 7-8 with a heavy load (and about 10-11 empty).
