Different Tow ratings

Does anybody know why the short wheelbase SuperCab (5.5 ft bed) tows less than the longer wheelbase SuperCab (6.5 ft bed). I thought the truck with a shorter wheel base is lighter, making the tow capacity higher.

The trucks that i am comparing are both with 3.73's, 5.4 liter V8, and 18 inch rims. Thanks.

I posted this same question a month ago. No solid answers, only the suggestion that the shorter wheelbase made the truck less stable for towing.

But comparing the wheelbases show only a few inches from some of the other cabs with longer beds. So....... This makes no sense to me, same engine, same trans, same rearend, same tires and wheels, similar weight, but 1500 lbs less pull. The Ford dealer truck manager had no clue either.

I ended up with s screw instead of a 5.5 scab myself.

Wheelbase

My understanding is that one of the major factors in towing is wheelbase, that directly relates to the ability of the truck to control the tow. There is a little over a foot in the wheelbase between the two and that translates to about 1400lbs additional capability
