does it unlock doors?
When you turn on your truck with the remote starter does it unlock the doors also? I live in Boston and keep my truck on the street I am wondering if I can hit the remote starter from my apt. window and not have to worry about anyone jumping in to my truck and driving away?
I think most remote starters will shut the car off if the key isn't put in the ignition within a certain amount of time. I'f somebody takes off in your truck, you'll have plenty of time to grab your baseball bat.
I had an experience recently while running into my local 7-11 store. I left the truck running, opened the doors, hit the door lock and shut the door. The locks popped open. It's a safety feature I guess. You just have to hit the last two buttons on the keyless entry pad to relock the doors once the door is shut. (Assuming you have a keyless entry pad.) I don't know if that safety feature will affect the auto start in any way. Just an FYI...
On my Ford remote start system it requires you to hit the lock button THEN the start button which assures the vehicle is locked while running. If some one does get in the vehicle, as soon as they touch the brake pedal, it shuts off the engine.
I had remote start on my 99 and just got it on my 03. Your keyless entry will still work with your OEM remote, or I always got keyless entry with my remote starter so I didn't have to carry 2 remotes. Most systems allow you to control the locks and remote starter independantly. You can start it with the truck locked of unlocked, and you can lock or unlock with either the remote starter activaded or not.
My new system even has an idle mode. I hit a button o nthe remote with the key in and truck running. Then, remove the key while the truck runs. I can lock the doors once out with my remote, and return a few minutes later. Unlock, and put the key in.
Also, every remote starter I have seen shuts off the engine if the brake is applied without putting the key in and turning to run. And, for automatics, we must hit the brake pedal before moving the gear lever out of park.
There are no vehicles availible with factory remote start (except maybe it can be done with OnStar). Dealer or other aftermarket option only and I recommend the later for price vs. performance ratio.

So would you advise going with an aftermarket over the factory? That is what I wa sleaning towards until someone mentioned warranty issues...Could an aftermarket remote starter affect the warranty?
I had my dealer install mine. My recieving unit was mounted inside the cab up high on the windshield. I get awesome range. It also locks the doors automatically when I use the remote start.
I also have a shut off mounted under the hood, while it is in remote start mode as soon as the hood is opened it shuts the engine off. Cost was under $300. If you live in snow country this is a must have.
