Got a Grill Guard
Wow that was a lot of quick responses.. Thanks guys..
Hey Robb I like the Ranchhand.. I was going to go with it but all the dealers here have their head up their butt.. this was the first "good" looking one they were able to get in.. the other one was a WAAG and looks like it belongs on the new ugly chevy (angry eyebrow look)
What length of Bed does yours have? Yellow ones are the best ones
Fatboy,
it was $449 plus I had them install it for 45 (good thing too this has 2 levers that allow for it to pivot forward so the hood can raise with out hitting it)
I think there was probably drilling involved. I got it at accessory depot in Lubbock texas... it is a Manik brand I think most places can order it... but everything for these trucks is on "back order" My Tonneau I ordered isn't going to even be made until Around Nov 3rd.. so I should see it around thanksgiving.
(editing this because Len is correct, my comments here were immature, I appoligize).. also I mainly got it for looks.... but since Texas does have a lot of wildlife that likes to hitchhike.. and play chicken with traffic.. I thought maybe it a good idea... also living in Lubbock... with all my fellow Texas Tech student/alumni here that can't drive, it is as important as air and water to have... I got hit 4 times in my Mustang here (none of them my fault) and on 4th time I said NO MORE ME GET REDNECK BATTLE TRUCK... so here I am with my redneck battle truck that I love. Going to try and get KC daylighters for Xmas (has holes already drilled in guard for them)
keep um coming

Lenticular-
My B-n-law and his son are alive today because the HAD a grill guard. It lifted the horse over the hood, and sheered of the cab. Fortunately they reacted and ducked below the dash and survived. Absent the grill guard the engine block AND the horse would have been in the front seat with them.
I would be interested in the statistics to substantiate your claim that more people are killed when hit with a grill guard vs. a bumper. Get hit by a truck, and, well...
Now I can understand a horse or a deer in the middle of the road. They are just dumb animals. Now, what is a person doing in the middle of the road?? People should know better, unless maybe they are one of Nader's Nuts doing a statistical study on vehicle impact; trucks with vs. without a grill guard...

I would be interested in knowing how many people have been hit by a fullsize truck and survived. Actually I do not really care. I think the safety of the occupants of the truck are more important than some idiot walking out in the road. If someone walks out in front of a 4x4 F-150 they are not going over the hood anyway...The truck is way too tall..but just my .02 worth.
Brewmaster....
Choose it your way if you please.
I am merely trying to point out in a polite and logical way that proper research has shown that more damage is done with a grill guard than without !
I WAS NOT SAYING DON'T OWN ONE !!
If you can't read plain English, and understand that I am merely trying to make a logical point in a courteous way then I'm afraid I can't help you.
Did you think that I don't understand what damage can be done by ANY car or truck in any accident.
I'm afraid that I see it all too often.....you see for many years I was a judge here in the Crown Courts and often got to see at first hand the suffering caused on our roads.
I might add that I also get to see the arrogance of drivers who sweep along our roads at over 100 miles an hour in their BM's and Mercs etc. (Yes I do understand speed...I have raced saloon cars, and own an Aston Martin and Bentley amongst others) and then stick their fingers up at those motorists who protest.
I have then had to watch from the bench as those very same motorists get dragged into court when eventually detained and pitifully plead for their licences and even freedom in some cases, so that they won't lose their jobs, their ability to maintain their mortgages, and probably their marriages as well.
It really is pitiful to see those same arrogant people sometimes reduced to tears.
So....I'm sorry...been there...seen that...done that....not just as a cliche...but for real !!!!
Driven on every continent...owned over 60 vehicles....lived nearly 60 years...cheated death (several times)....
Let's hear YOUR statistics !
I repeat....IF you have a grill guard.....please have at the back of your mind, the flip side.
GET IT NOW !!??

I've just read a couple of replies regarding hitting pedestrians and the "Tough ****" comment.
Unbelievably immature and not worth responding too...except for saying....
They are accidents....get it...accidents.
They happen to us all at some time in life bt of course when they happen it will never be your fault will it !!?
Softly softly...catchee monkey.
Be sure your words will come back to haunt you.
I'm afraid I will neither look at or reply to further posts on this topic, because I cannot deal with that level of arrogance and ignorance.
I was merely trying to point out a statistic.
If you ARE too arrogant or stupid to understand then I can't help...but then those are the very sort of people we see in our courts all the time.
As for the fact that lives were SAVED by a grill guard...fair enough....many years ago I was involved in an accident where I was saved by NOT wearing a seat belt (Before they were compulsor), but the exception sometimes proves the rule doesn't it ?

can you say "over reaction?" i wasn't flaming you Lenticular, I was just saying I don't think the US gives as much thought to pedestrians. relax man.
i don't want to get into a pissing match over grill guards because I really don't give flying f**k. i ain't putting one on my truck no matter what. you don't have to worry about me killing someone because of a grill guard because I don't want one.
but i agree with what others posted, if you want to talk about proper research, you really should post numbers and cite a source. and for argument's sake, I got no stats, but neither do you. you're speaking from your experience, which is no doubt accurate, but that isn't a statistic per se. look at your post, there are no stats there. put up or shut up, that's the way the world works. i'm sure you learned that in your nearly 60 years of living. i know I have in my mere 24 years.
again, i'm not flaming you because you do raise valid points that people should consider. cheers.
P.S. If you need a Jaguar hood ornament, we can always fed ex them over to the UK.

You bring up a good point Lenticular. Something I never really thought of. The statistics for pedestrians killed by automobiles is actually very staggering. Something the media doesn't really talk about.
I ride a motorcycle and I've come to find out there have been more pedestrians killed this year than those riding motorcycles! A stat I'm quick to quote whenever someone says I'm going to kill myself. BTW, I do wear my helmet.
But whenever a motorcyclist is hit you can guarantee it'll be on the front page..
I don't know if it would sway my decision on purchasing a guard or not but at least I'm more educated on the subject. I do have to protect my family while their in my truck. Deer here in Ohio kill a lot of motorists as well..

Ok OK........so I said I wouldn't come back to this thread.
I am normally proud of being a person who stands by my word, but on this occasion things were slightly different.
Having been on this forum for over 2 years and over 1100 posts it almost gets a habit, plus I still look at the other threads.
More than that though I didn't want my comments to appear as too pompous and overbearing, or to have caused any offence.
Thus when I looked back I was more than happy that......
ctupton
.....had the graciousness and guts to say what he did about an earlier comment.
Well done and thankyou.
For pepatrick and SlapPaddle ....can I clarify one thing.
I didn't include any statistics.
Partly because it would take me ages to dig them out from somewhere in the ether, and partly because we all know that statistics can be made to say anything we want them too.
However my views were derived from a series of BBC documentaries that came at a time about 5 years ago when it got to be the in thing to have bull bars as we call them, fitted to Range Rovers, and other up market 4WD's.
Accident statistics started to appear suggesting that where pedestrians had come into contact with vehicles fitted with the bars the injuries sustained were always MORE serious than those without.
As I recollect the Vehicle Research Laboratories set up numerous trials with dummies and proved this without much doubt.
I didn't think there would be much point in statistics because to me it only seems to be common sense to realise that impact with a bar is going to result in more localised and intense pressure on a small area of the body than being hit with a larger mass of front end.....though of course we all accept that is bad enough anyway !!
Brewmaster
Thanks for your offer of the mascot being sent over.
as you probably know I live part of the year in Tx so could get one myself.
However that is not necessary for several reasons.
They ARE available over here and in fact I had 3 S Type Jags and fitted a sprung leaper on the last one.
HOWEVER , IF I had had an accident and injured a pedestrian, my insurance position would have been very questionable !
As a judge I really shouldn't have done it....but in life we all take calculated gambles, and as long as we accept that sometimes we are going to lose and accept the consequences.....all well and good.
Also I only had the Jags to keep in the companies good books for a first in line order for the "F" type.
In fact I was fifth in the world to get one, but of course Jaguar (Or should we say Ford)...suddely decided to cancel the project in favour of the diesel "X" Type....AAAARRRGGGHHHH !
What a stupid decision since Ford has now reincarnated the GT 40 and must see the interest it generates for the company.
The F Type as the reincarnation of the old E Type would have done exacty the same.
Anyway when Jaguar didn't even have the courtesy to tell customers of the cancellation (and I had my order in for nearly 5 years !), or offer refunds of deposit.....that's when I went away and bought my Aston Martin.....and before anyone reminds me ...yes I know it's another Ford !!!!
Anyway I hope my verbose meanderings have cleared the air and thanks for your response gentlemen !!
Lenticular....Lenny....Len....well John actually !!!

No harm in a little spirited debate John.
Actually, your post motivated me to read a little further on the subject. Always interested to consider differing views, even if I don't agree. From what little I did read, it seems the issue is mostly an Australian and European initiative, and not really a world wide ban in the making. Very much a political hot spud. Almost forgot about all those Mad Max style vehicles that the Aussies are so keen about...
I hadn't considered the benefits (for pedestrian safety) with the use of plastic material that yield more on impact (than do the steel guards), yet still provide a greater degree of vehicle and passenger damage protection than no guards. However, with a good deal of the U.S. buyers fixated on the aesthetic aspect of grill guards, it would be hard -- short of government intervention -- for me to think that trend would change anytime soon.
It was also interested to read some comments that some of the impetus for bringing about a ban on 'bull bars', is in part due to the interests of the insurance industry. The argument being, that the guards that wrap around tend to treate more damage to the vehicle in frontal impacts that deform the guards back in to the vehicle. No idea if there is a basis in fact with that argument, but nonetheless, it is interesting to consider the insurance company angle. I would think the more functional designs would in fact lessen the potential insurance claim, as is born out by my first hand experience with a serious 'bull bar' (an ARB unit in this case) having prevented significant damage on one of my vehicles.
One last point that hasn't been addressed: The fact that increased vehicle height makes the probability greater that pedestrians will be runover in an accident, rather than tossed over the windshield, or killed by an aftermarket grill guard. Witness the design of the new Volvo XC90 SUV, that has an engineered in front end safety device to deal with the possibility of things (cars and people) impacting below bumper height.
In a perfect world, we would all drive cars with exactly the same bumpers heights, sorta like bumper cars. Would be a more boring but safer world. Me? I like living in the land of Ralph Nader.
(I can't believe I'm about to argue on your side but darn it it makes since on both side of argument) Modern day vehicles are designed to accordian upon an impact of 3mph or more when hit upon a sizeable object, Which absorbs alot of the force of the impact so the body of what ever got hit doesn't have to take all the force. a Grill guard on the other hand is designed not to deflect or absorb anything it is designed to help keep lighter forces from screwing up the crumple zones. which inturn then the forces have to go somewhere. And the Bull bars could be arguably worse than regular grill guards because they are often a larger and stronger diameter of pipe, which can take even more force before deflecting, or structurally failing.
The land of Ralph Nader, oh that is California, now the land of Arnold and his H2 has grill guards as do the real HMMWV's in the military which are great at protecting the earlier fiberglass hoods. The later up-armored models have built in guards....My personal opinion not, that it matters is that them grill guards are just damn ugly for a street driven vehicle, but practicle for one being used off-road. Too each his/her own
