Valve Tap?

I have a 04 FX4 SCAB, and it sounds like a diesel. To be honest my the motor sounds like a muffled diesel. I was just wondering is it just me. The dealership even said it was loud, but took 2 other 5.4 3v trucks out and they all sound like that. I know the 5.4 2v is a whole lot more quiet that the 3v. Just thought I would rant. Any opinions.

My 5.4 in a Lariat Super Cab 4X2 is quieter than the engine in my Toyota MR2 and about on par for a Honda Accord. Can't imagine it being any quieter.

Hope you are not hearing the dreaded piston slap that has been discussed on other threads.

My 5.4L is quiet in idle. I am looking forward to making it louder with a new intake and a cat-back system....whenever they are available.

I too have a similar noise. The dealer said it was my fuel injectors and so did my private mechanic. Said it was not the valves. I still don't like it, but I tend to believe them.

Enjoy the ride

May be the variable cam timing....that is what they pinpointed the noise in my truck.
