Special Ordering a Truck

I have a question for you guys. I ordered a F-250 SuperDuty XLT back in 2001 with a Triton V10 engine from a local dealer. It took four months to come in. When it finally came in it had 95 miles on the odometer and the metal surface of the tailgate was blistered. I asked the typical question anyone would ask about a 30K truck they special ordered. Why does it have so many miles on it and why is the tailgate messed up? The salesman said that it had been pulled off the line and "road tested". The tailgate was dented OUT when the sheetmetal was stamped according to him.
I opted to let them keep the truck because I wasn't getting straight answers as to why it was "road tested". Also he said they would have to repair the tailgate in their body shop because Ford would not replace it.
Have any of you ever heard of this "road testing"? I have always wondered what the deal was? I have a '04 Lariat Supercrew 4x4 on order and I am concerned about possibly going through the same ordeal again.

I have heard of it but if your truck was used for testing they would have put a special sticker on it notifting you of this fact. No sticker no truth from the dealer.

23 Miles across the tidewater ?

My lariat was delivered with 23 miles on it.

This was probably the trip to/from that infamous parking lot in Virginia Beach.

Other experiences?

The government does test new vehicles from time to time. They'll pull a truck (or some) from a caravan or allotment and drive it (them) for emissions compliance and whatnot. However, they do put a sticker on the vehicle stating that it was part of a gov't test. So, clarkn is correct... no sticker, no truth.

Mine had 4 miles on it when I picked it up.

My 04 FX4 was test driven by the dealer.

Some sticker on the window said something like: "Congrats, your car has been randomly selected by ford to receive a road test. All systems passed, blah, blah"

It had about 65 miles on it.

whatever

Translation: Congratulations! Since you didn't know it was here yet, we took your truck out for lunch, home to move some things and beat the hell out of it to see how well it holds up.
