Question about buying a new truck

Why is it that when you go to the dealer and you start talking about the price the first thing they want to do is run your credit befor they'll even start talking prices ?

My dealer has not asked anything about credit.

Ordered my truck no questions asked.

Got it on X-plan. About $71.00 below invoice.

I used to get the question - "How much CAN you pay per month?"
That was upsetting.

I'd move on to a different dealer if they don't know how to treat the customer right.

When looking for my truck I talked to 15 dealers, not one asked about my credit.

Deal with fleet managers, not the guys who attack you when you step on the lot. When you email the dealership internet contacts, they're usually some sort of fleet manager. Build your vehicle on edmunds.com and then email all dealerships you're willing to drive to to pick up your new ride.

When I go in to talk price, I don't bother asking what they want, I tell them that I want invoice. This method seemed to work very well. They either say ok, they will check with someone else (which is usually just a stall tactic) or will counter with a above invoice price.

Go to several dealerships.

Credit checks should be after you agree to buy a truck, when you talk financing. If you're paying cash (or getting financing through a bank), no credit check necessary.

Never, and I repeat NEVER tell them your social (used for the credit check) till after you have negotiated a cost for the truck. Get the cost of the truck before taxes and license fees because you will know what you are willing to pay and you basically should have estimated your taxes and fees. Just tell them to expect Gold tier credit rating (if that is the case) or tell them an approximate credit score that you know you are. The last thing you want is for the dealer to run a CC and then not give you a good deal. Get every cost in writing before you let them run it, that way you can tell them to not add the extra fees that did not exist before the CC. If the salesman complains say bring out your boss, if he won't do this for you ask for his boss and keep going up the foodchain. Remember that you are the predator and feed on them not the other way around. Let them know that you are going to send a letter to Ford about each employee that does not want to help. You will either get some where or you will need to go to another dealer. And always be willing to stand up and walk away. I spent 6 hours on my dad's truck and 4 hours on my brother in laws mustang (walked out 3 times and the sales man kept running back to us, when we got to the truck on the last time they made a killer deal) but both came out beating the dealer. I got my truck for 750 below invoice (2003 sc) by being patient.
Hope that helps.

Brian

They want to know your credit so that they can figure out what you can or cannot pay. Give them no personal info until you've worked out a price. Don't even tell them how you're paying until that's worked out.

I usually work my deal over the phone and the girl thought she was being slick asking all kinds of questions and wanting my SSN. I finally went in and told them this is what I want. I didn't pay mark up told them what kind of payment I wanted and went from there. They tried to toss a 60 month $600 + lease payment. After I laughed and said no, they tried to give me a 72 month buy with a $700 + payment. In short I got a the payment I wanted with the amount I was going to put down and paid $3000 under invoice. I threatened to walk and look elsewhere as well as telling the manager what he could do with the '03 he offered me instead of the '04. So I say just have a game plan and be ready to say no and walk out if they don't budge. Have the attitude that they are not the only dealer and that you can always buy somewhere else. Trust me, if they want to they will cut you a deal!

Are you SURE $3000 isn't a typo? Even a/x plan isn't that much under invoice.

Based on the grammatical content of his post, I doubt $3000.00 under invoice is happening in this picture. I would imagine that the dealer would tell you to walk, before taking $3000.00 back of invoice.

.02 worth

I would believe $3000 under MSRP, that's the deal we got this past weekend.

& I'm still wondering if I paid too much

I would agree with 3000 under MSRP. You did not pay too much. That is a good deal on 2004s. Enjoy it.

Pepatrick, No error on the $3000! It happened trust me.
Big jim I've used the X-plan on my other two F150 Screws and didn't have it for this one. So yes it happens believe it or not!

green21, are you sure it's not $3000.00 below MSRP ?

If it's 3000.00 below invoice the dealer would be losing money they only get 3% hold back

But if it is 3000.00 below invoice can you e-mail me the dealer name I live in OC Ca. and would drive to Palm Spring for that

Same reason that Kaiser Permanente will leave a dying man on the street as they check for medical insurance: Greed
