weak lifters.....suppose to be replaced tomorrow. Lets see if that is actually the problem.

i've been following beastboy's problem in the multiple threads but I must say i am lost. what is a lifter? does it just lift the valve to open it? and we are talking about one of the valves on the 3V system, right? is it an intake or an exhaust valve? is just one valve affected, or are they all screwed up?
I didn't think these had lifters, I thought they were overhead cams that pushed down on the rocker arms or directly on the valve. If anything they have lash adjustment cups where a cup goes over the spring and is shimmed to the correct tolerances between the cam and the valve. I haven't tore one of these down yet so I am not for sure on their build-up. I guess I will go to fords website and look at the 3d model they put in an animation and see if it shows the possible adjustment area.

Many overhead cam engines use a system which has the cam actuating the center of a rocker, with the valve on one end and a support on the other end. Most times, that support is hydraulically adjustible, in exactlly the same way as the 'old style' hydraulic lifters (pumps up via pressurized engine oil pumped into the bore it's installed in). This system was very common in the 2.3L 4 cyl engines that Ford put in everything from late '70s Pintos through Rangers and LTD's in the '80s, and even the t-bird turbo.
I don't think I have ever seen the shimmed cam followers on an american built engine. The first years of the Plymouth Horizon had them, but they were using a VW engine....Used to see a lot of Jaguars and Audis set up that way......what a pain in the butt those were....

Whoops, how could I have forgoten about the infamous Vega (boat) motor (anchor)? It had the shims......
