2004 tire selection

I'm looking at both the 4x4 FX4 and the Lariat.

Which would most of you prefer? The P275/65Rx18 or the LT275/65Rx18 tires?

I don't do much off roading and don't haul really heavy things very often. But I like the look of the LT tires better. I would like to upgrade, but is there a big noise or ride difference?

How much scratch are we talking about?
Tires and wheels are some of the things I wouldn't pay money to upgrade.

If standard fare does not suit you, the money is better spent in the aftermarket rather than what Ford may give you.

I noticed you didn't mention Brand.

Personally I'm not an aftermarket guy. I like everything all at once. I went w/ the FX4 "18 P275/65Rx18. Really as long as they're all terrain and outside white letters, I'm pretty happy.

LT tires???

Just an interesting note.
I have a 4x4 Lariat Screw ordered and I had to remove the LT tires (they were an add on in order to get skid plates) because they were holding up my getting a build date.

The dealer said there was a problem getting them from the manufacturer.

Cheers!

The upgrade to the LT tires is $275 on the Lariat. The LT tires are listed as Goodyear, and the P rated tires are BF Goodrich. The dealer looked them up in their configuration book for the brands (or whatever you call it).

I'll have to stop by and see exactly what model of tires they are using. If it is a Wrangler AP that will be a show stopper. They are just horrible.

I just looked at Nathan's gallery. It looks like both the blue FX4 and the tan Lariat both have the BFG Rugged Trail TAs.

This gallery shows a Lariat with Goodyear Wrangler AT/S. Has anyone ever had these tires before? What did you think? They rated fairly high at www.tirerackc.om, http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....rangler+AT%2FS

The BFG's are ratede here. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ed+Trail+T%2FA

I priced the Goodyear Wrangler AT/S at Tire Rack and they are $168 each. The BFG's are about $131 each (the closest size available at Tire Rack is the 265/70R17). That's a difference of $37 each or 4 for $148.

Jeez, after looking at the comparisons and the money, I think it's worth it to upgrade!

Thoughts?

I had the AT/S tires are ok. I had them on my 99, but those were Ps. The AT/S is better than the RT/S. They are a high pressure hard rubber tire that gives you that firm 4x4 ride and bounce in the rear end.

I think it would be better to compare the price of the two tires in the same size, like 265/70/17. I'm sure the new size come at a higher cost for a while.

I have seen 4 trucks in the past week all 4X4's. Two were XLT's the other 2 were FX4's. The XLT's had GENERALS with the 17in. wheels. One FX4 had GOODYEARS with 17in. wheels the other had the 18in. wheels with BFGOODRICH tires. IMO the 17in. wheels look lost on these 4X4's which were all Scab's. When I orderd my FX4 Screw with the 18in. wheels & LT tires the dealer asked if I wanted GOODYEARS or MICHELINS I got the MICHELINS. There was a thread about a month ago on the difference between the P & LT tires. Since I surf fish alot here in NJ and have to air down the tires I opted for the LT's because they are heavier walled than the P's but if you mainly highway drive the P's are just fine.
