Electronic Shift-on-the-Fly?
Electronic Shift-on-the-Fly?
so in pricing a new F150 I came across this little fancy phrase as an option for the truck, "electronic shift-on-the-fly." i think it has something to do with the transmission, but would someone care to explain to this chump what exactly it means? and is it worth getting on an '04 4.6L V8 4x4 Scab XLT? thanks in advance.
ESOF gives you the ability to shift from 2WD to 4WD (and vice-versa) while driving. I don't have much more info than that because I'm not really a 4X guy.
As far as 4.6 or 5.4, I would (and did) opt for the 5.4 V8. Aside from the obvious reason of more power for towing and whatnot, it's more to carry the truck with... especially being that these trucks are about 500 lbs. heavier than '03's. I think it would be a shame to choose a 4.6 in this truck.
Just my $.02, though.

ESOF means you turn a little switch to engage 4WD high and low vs. the lever out of the floor directly connected to the 4WD transfer case. The lever is still shift on the fly, or MSOF for manual shift on the fly. The convinience and extra floor space is nice.
As for 4.6 vs. 5.4L, skip the 4.6 with that truck. As said, this model weighs significantly more than the prior model. The 4.6L did not receive the boost in power the 5.4L did. And considering aftermarket options to boost power, the 5.4L is a relatively cheap option.

Personally I'd save the $150 and just get the MSOF lever. It's really not inconvenient (my opinion). I'd put the $150 towards upgrading to a 5.4L. I'd strongly suggest the 5.4L for a 4x4 with the extra weight it's packing this year.
Well the other guys pretty much answered the question. I have ESOF right now on my Explorer. I like it personally. I went with the 5.4 engine. I actually drove two '03s to test it. I cranked the air conditioner in both and checked the start up speed. The 4.6 seemed to be sluggish in getting up to speed. The second I stepped on the gas in the 5.4, I knew I wanted that. Plus it is going to be heavier and if the 4.6 had trouble on the lighter '03, I can't imagine it doing better on the 500lb heavier '04.
