I think shift on the fly is required if you order the captains chairs on SC or SCrew... Below is a link to the ordering guide.. hope it helps.

If you get captains chairs, you must get shift on the fly due to the lack of room for the manual on the floor. However, with the split bench, you can still get the manual shift for the 4 wheel drive.

I think you actually have that backwards, what they are saying is that if you get captains chairs, then the truck will have the flow thru console, so there is nowhere to put the manual shifter. Thus, all trucks with captains chairs come with electronic 4X4 shifting. Hope this helps...

Thanks,

I just re-read the ordering guide and realized that i read it backwards. Kinda like: All dogs are animals so all animals must be dogs. I'm a big Dope.... oh well.

Ive never had elect. 4x4, does it operate the same way like "shift on the fly"? I hope so, I love the manual but must give it up for the fx4 with capt. chairs.

Electric is still shift on the fly. You can turn the switch to engage 4wd high or disengage it up to 45mph. For 4wd low, you must be in neutral and moving at less than 3mph.

On a side note to those of you who will be getting the shift on the fly for the first time (like me), I have a bit of advice.

This comes from my brother in law who was a Ford tech for 4 years: He says the only problem with the on the fly is that the contacts on the motor which engages the 4WD is prone to corrosion and fouling due to lack of use. He said it's typical for people to have a problem getting the truck into 4WD when they need it cause they hadn't used it all year.

Solution: Put your truck in 4WD periodically. Maybe once a month or more. This just gives the motor a workout and keeps it lubed.

Jeez, I can't wait until these trucks hit the dealerships. Any word on a date? Or even an approximation? End of August? HELP ME you salespeople!

We have an 04 F-150 Lariat in stock now. Your dealer should have one by the end of July...first part of August at the latest. I went on a Ride and Drive on the new 04 two weeks ago--got to drive about 10 of them--a couple of each model available. They drive better than an 03 Expedition.
