what's the best way to go about replacing my battery cables? I can clearly tell the oem clamps were cut off a long time ago in favor of some marine style clamps. I can see that the wire is actually green and corroded into the wire itself. I could cut it off and just place a little more into the clamp but would just really like to replace it all the right way.
Rock Auto has replacement cables. OEM Motorcraft is very expensive. They have DEKA cables, by type, color length, and gauge. They have both post terminal cables and switch to starter cables. They also have Standard post terminal cables for a lot less than Motorcraft.
The Motorcraft part costs $218.79 and that doesn't look like it's what you need. Measure your cables and get the DEKA. The Standard positive is 6 gauge and the negative is 4 gauge, the DEKA is available in 4 gauge and 2 gauge.
You definitely can go the route of straight cables like the DEKA variety on RA. You will have several gauge options to choose from. Another point of consideration is unless you are adding increased load and power distribution for extra lighting and or accessories or both, I would think the OEM spec would be more than adequate. I went with the OEM battery cables since they have all the factory attachments and it is literally a one for one swap. When I was rebuilding my transmission last month I noticed the green corrosion you are explaining up on the battery was down on the other end of the cabling as well. (at the starter) I figured if the corrosion was that bad on both ends I would replace the entire harness. I was thoroughly pleased with the part. It even had new wire retention pins already fastened to the wire loom. To each their own. Good luck!
