Exhaust manifold leaking is not that uncommon on most all V8 engines. The manifold is cast iron and the head is aluminum. They expand at different rates and eventually break the bolts or studs that hold them to the head. I haven't had the problem but there are many you tube videos about replacing the manifolds. It's usually best to get a mechanic to do it because the likelihood of having trouble getting the bolts or studs out of the heads is high and they usually resort to using an acetylene torch to heat the bolts.

with the exhaust manifold that needs to be replaced would it be unreasonable to offer her 3900 for it instead of 5k just because of that?
You have to go look at the truck before you can negotiate the price. You may or may not want it after you see it. I suggest you ask a shop what it charges for the manifold replacement and have that info with you for negotiating purposes when you see it.
there may be but just need to see it and find out. As long the transmission is solid and the engine is still solid should be a good buy.
