Stock am/fm/cassette stereo Issues (2)

2001 ford f150 supercrew 5.4l 4x4

I have 2 things going wrong...

1) sometimes I reach and turn the volume up just a little and it JUMPS directly to full Loudness. It will take me several tries to get the loudness to go back down including turning the radio On and Off several times.

2) The driver door speaker only works intermittently, off more often than on. I already pulled that speaker and re-soldered any and all connections where the wires already had solder, checked the wiring for cracks/breaks and made sure each of the 2 "wires to speaker" connectors were Firmly attached.

Is the OEM Stock stereos in these trucks problematic?

I dont believe I have ever had these two issues happen before in any of my past vehicles.

(this stereo system has the OEM 6 disc cd changer located behind the rear, right side seat. I have NOT used the cd disc changer since I purchased the truck in July)

Thank You

I don't have the CD changer, but my OEM head unit and speakers still work fine.

Sounds to me like your head unit has internal issues and the intermittent speaker itself does too, unless there's a wiring issue between it and the head unit. A good place to look is the wire bundle that goes between the door and cab interior.

I believe it was on This Forum where I had read about a guy with a similar problem and he had somehow figured out that it was the OEM Stereo Deck itself that had "internal issues".

I am thinking that if he had the same problem as I am having then there are probably other ford f150 owners that have also had the same problems as well. I believe he also said something about the OEM 6 disc cd changer having either something to do with it or having its own separate issues too. I am going to have to do some more research again, I searched this out back in late July and cant really remember much of what I read on it.

I'm not sure if I would want to try to replace it with another used one and hope that the used one works correctly or upgrade to some type of new deck.

Now as I am older I prefer to keep things in Original but Good Working Condition. I may just try to find a Used Exact Replacement Deck maybe on eBay.

Does Anyone know of some newer, nicer, more up to date and better built Stereo Decks in other Fords that would Direct Fit into our trucks dash???

the stereo is these trucks are everywhere!!!! truthfully there are forums for ONLY ford stereo swaps. spend 20 minutes....remove YOUR stereo take a pic of the ID label on the back and how many/TYPE of plug ins you ARE USING. Now you are armed with some info to go searching. The indash 6 cd head unit sux about the most. Nice when it works....sux when it don't...Easier to swap in an aftermarket unit.
Good luck

I bought the Ford car stereo Removal Tool today at Autozone and pulled the deck out of the dash.
I unplugged the two wiring connectors and the antenna cable all from the back side of the deck and looked the deck over. I took some pictures of the deck (see below) and then checked the plug in areas over, sprayed a little WD-40 into the On/Off shaft under the On/Off button, pushed it on and off several times just to see if it might help somehow, maybe by lubricating or even cleaning the inside area. Plugged the deck back in and then re-installed the deck.
The Volume is now working as it is supposed to, after I had driven the truck today for about a half hour the driver door speaker came back on while driving and stayed on the rest of the drive (though this has happened several times before where the driver door speaker comes on and off at will.)
I'll be curious to see if removing the deck, unplugging it and plugging it back in may have helped the deck to somehow start working properly.
If not... I found an OEM Refurbished deck on JEGS for $165, looks to be the Exact same deck that is currently in this truck.

there are about a dozen different model FORD stereo's that will work for YOUR truck. Everything from am/fm....to am/fm 6 disc with AUX. Literally a weeks worth of searching and reading about the differences so you can make a wise choice. I recommend the single cd WITH AUX input as this will allow you to add in a bluetooth or usb

btw...IIRC there are a couple models that do NOT work...Mustang is one of them. but the old TOWN CAR does..

problem is ...by the time you "add" stuff...blue tooth, usb...etc. You are in for another $75 ...so now you have a factory stereo with what you want...with no rca's or sub output lines and your in for $250. I have a badazz pioneer (all that included) for $200 in mine and plays nicely with my mtx amps and fosgate cones, pioneer subs. All in what YOU want/need from your stereo.

I know you said you want to stick with OEM, but if you want a new head unit and/or speakers, you can't beat Crutchfield. Yes, you can find them cheaper, but you can't beat their service. They list everything that will fit, they have required adapters, and provide excellent phone support. We put a Kenwood replacement deck into a 1998 E-van, it came with adapters to plug it in to the factory harness and a dash filler panel because it was single DIN, factory is 1.5 DIN.

I appreciate all the great info!!

I prefer to stay stock. I found that JEGS sells a Refurbished radio that is my Exact Replacement Except the Refurbish company adds a "Auxiliary Input" to the radio. (see below) Will the Auxiliary Input allow me to add in a bluetooth or usb?

Apparently the company that refurbishes them does an excellent job and there are rarely any returns. I am pretty sure I am going to buy one of these radios from JEGS and add the 1 year warranty just for peace of mind in case I receive one that has an issue.

That's a 3.5mm aux jack. It's designed to connect to a headphone jack on a device. I believe you can get adapters for Bluetooth and USB that can connect to it.

glc is correct. You can also get Bluetooth/FM converters, but the audio typically isn't as crisp.
This thread reminds me: I need to get my radio and 6-disk change on eBay.

JSYK.....I am pretty far behind you guys on all this electronics knowledge...

a USB port is a rectangle shaped hole in a computer correct?

Also.. on that radie at JEGS that I mentioned... Can I somehow connect my cell phone to the radio through that 3.5mm hole in the radio and play my music from my phone through the radio and out the truck speakers? I would like to be able to play some stuff off of You Tube, through my cell phone and into the radio as well, can I do that somehow?
and if so... What kind of wire connector from my phone to the radio would I need exactly?

I really prefer to Not modify my truck at all unless I have to... I just prefer to have All Original Factory but... that all that Factory stuff needs to work correctly, as it is supposed to.
However I did add an aftermarket trailer brake controller since this truck did Not come with one from Factory.

One more question about replacing my stock radio with another stock radio... this is in a 2001 f150............................

"It is likely you will need to have a dealership reprogram this part to work in your vehicle and provide you with a new security code".
***is the above Bolded statement True?

When I had the driver door panel removed and checked out the speaker I did Not check the wire bundle running through the front of the door into the cab for and wire breaks, shorts, bare wires.
Before I go and replace this radio, I am going to get into that wire bundle see if there is any wire damage/problems. If I can get the driver door speaker to work All The Time as it is supposed to, then I would be happy with that and just keep the radio.
I'll get on this soon.

Yes, if your phone has a headphone jack. You will need a cable with a 3.5mm stereo 3 conductor plug on each end.
