Looking for some 8.8 rear axle information

I have a 96 F150 that I'd like to do a rear disc brake conversion on. I know they changed over sometime around 99 or 2000. There's a few things I'm unsure about though.

1. I know at some point they changed how the shocks mount on the 10th gen. Did they change it so they faced opposite directions the same year they swapped over to disc brakes?

2. Distance between between shock and spring mounts. If someone would be willing to get measurements or knows what they are, please let me know. Also let me know if those measurements are inside to inside or what.

3. I realize the bolt patterns are different. I already plan on getting aftermarkets wheels since I want 17s or 18s anyway. I'd just look for something that's available in the same style and size in both bolt patterns. I figured it would be no different than a sports car that has different size wheels for the front and back.

There's a couple reasons I'm thinking about going this route. It would be easier to find the brake parts when needed vs finding something that works with a conversion kit. I want to convert to limited slip. Finding a complete axle would probably be cheaper and faster than buying everything and having to swap it out.

Thanks for the help.

Big difference between a 96 and a 97.

I have an 01, but the rear axle is a 9.75" and has disk brakes

I'm looking to do a swap as well. I got a 92 with the 8.8". If just a brake swap is better than the whole axle then I'm fine with that. But I also need new gearing as I'm getting fat tires. Redoing the gears is easy. But I'm worried about how everything will line up. Gotta know what vehicles to look for where the swap would work. Oh, and one more thing. Ive heard a stock 8.8" Is pretty decent off road. Is a locker worth it? I would prefer manual hubs.
