2000 F150 4.2 V6 Transmission Won't Go Into Gear

Hello, thank you for taking the time to read and help if you can. I had an issue with the clutch going out while driving, the pedal went straight to the floor and wouldn't go into gear. Had to pull over and park it in a parking lot. Went back same day bled the clutch got some pressure built in the pedal and drove it maybe a mile or so home. Got home and the pedal went back to floor. Next day dropped the transmission and replaced the clutch and pressure plate. Got the transmission back on started the truck and it wouldn't go in gear at all while running but would go into gear while engine shut off. Thought I possibly put clutch plate in wrong so dropped transmission again and checked but it was all on correct so put transmission back on. Noticed the internal slave cylinder was leaking so dropped the transmission again and replaced that still same issue engine off goes into gear engine running does not go into gear. Thought there may be air in the lines so pulled the master cylinder completely out and did a gravity bleed, held master at 45 degree angle pushed push rod no air bubbles. When pulling the push rod heard a noise but I'm thinking since it's been sitting in the same place for 20 years it was just stuck. Reinstalled same master cylinder and bled slave cylinder for an hour or so. Still same issue. Had to drive it without clutch to mechanic shop to hook it up to machine and get the air out that I may have missed, they said there was no air in the line and that the slave cylinder wasn't fully reaching the clutch. Tried driving it home again with no clutch heard a banging noise, probably messed something up in the transmission now but not sure. Turned out the slave cylinder was bad and the rod in the middle was almost a half inch or a little more short of reaching the clutch. Brought slave back to autop store and got a new one which did reach clutch. Checked it before attaching the drive shaft and went into gear thought it was fixed finally. After attaching drive shaft though same issue happened, won't go into gear while running but while engine is off it goes into every gear. I'm stuck now because I think I did damage the transmission as now it knocks, I did make sure to refill transmission fluid every time and re bleed cylinders. Also question, can a master cylinder have an internal leak? And should I just replace that at this point? Sorry this is so long I just wanted to give all the information. Appreciate any help!

The reason your clutch went "out" to begin with was the slave cylinder leak. This is common on these trucks. The slave cylinder and throwout bearing are serviced as an assembly.

You *should* have replaced everything when you went in the first time - disc, pressure plate, pilot bearing, and the slave cylinder/throwout bearing assembly, and resurfaced the flywheel.

Yes, the master cylinder can have an internal leak. It can also leak externally, there will be fluid behind the carpet inside the truck.

Time to drop the tranny again and inspect everything.

Sully, welcome to the forum! I deleted the other thread you created on this topic because we've found that duplicate threads can lead to confusing, sometimes contradictory replies that can waste your time or worse, cost you money.

You certainly seem to know what you're doing. Hang in there. Someone with more smarts than me will be along with some ideas.

And, I see glc already has posted.
