Cv axle replacement

Might try to replace my cv today. Do I torque it in the air with no weight, some weight on it, or full weight?

Going to go to lowe's and get a craftsmen torque wrench or a lowe's brand. See what they have. Either will be some $ though, as I need to get one that can go up to 250 ft/lbs

When I replaced my bearing hubs, I bought the Lowes brand Kobalt torque wrench for less than $100. Seems to work okay and on the box it says it has a life time guarantee. Support the lower A arm with a jack or jack stand.

This is the one I bought. Supposedly a year warranty, but on the box, it states lifetime warranty?

I have checked harbor freight, their is quinn and icon that i like. They seem to better then their regular Pittsburg line. I feel lowe's brand or craftsmen would be a little higher quality though, and price is similar

For just one job, see if you can rent/borrow one from a parts store.

It isn't one job though. I am finding I need it more and more. My current wrench is Harbor Freight Pittsburg and only goes to 150 ft/lbs. It's ok I guess, but this Quinn seems quite good.

you HAVE to have a 12pt 12mm socket for the 6 bolts from axle to diff. The bolt heads are 12 pt.......

One thing I did notice, is the cv doesn't have a hole in it for the castle nut or cotter pin.....

I did observe the nut did have it slightly smashed in though, much like a stover type locknut, and it is torqued to spec.

what brand axles did you buy? I've NEVER seen a mechanical lock nut on a servicable part before...much less a torque specific application like a hub bearing.....hmm

I thought it was slightly weird at first also..... but I will say, a lot of fwd imports use that style replacement nut

axle is the heavy-duty cardone:
