3 years ago i purchased a 1999 F-150 XLT Super Cab with a 4.6l engine from the original owner. Ford the past 3 years when I bought parts (8th digit in VIN is W) I specified the parts wrre for a 1999 4.6 Romeo engine. Everything fit and performed as expected.
At 199k the motor overheates and self distructs. After pulling the engine I find a sticker that reads Supprise!

Is it possible that Ford put a 23 month old 1997 engine in a 1999 truck?
