Do I have a 97, a 99 4.6.

3 years ago i purchased a 1999 F-150 XLT Super Cab with a 4.6l engine from the original owner. Ford the past 3 years when I bought parts (8th digit in VIN is W) I specified the parts wrre for a 1999 4.6 Romeo engine. Everything fit and performed as expected.

At 199k the motor overheates and self distructs. After pulling the engine I find a sticker that reads

Supprise!

FORD WINDSOR ONTARIO CANADA
08-01-1997.

Is it possible that Ford put a 23 month old 1997 engine in a 1999 truck?

No.

Someone replaced the engine at one point in time.

so someone swapped valve/cam covers? or the entire engine?

what’s the actual engine a PI or an NPI?

P.S. it takes operator error to keep driving an overheating motor and destroy it

What is the build date of your truck? It's more likely that your truck was built around June or July 1998 and it had a 10 month old engine put in it during assembly
