4.2-4.6 swap?

4.2-4.6 swap?

ive got a 97 with the 4.2 with some miles on her....and noticed a 4.6 with the trans with less than 50k on it on c-list for 500 bucks....sounds pretty good but can it be done..basically will it fit...and what am i lookin to pay to install em?...

Yes it will fit.
You will need to get the computer to run that trans also.

That's a good deal. I would jump on it. Not sure what install would be since it would be going from a 4.2 to 4.6 which involves a bit more work. If I were to guess, if you find a shop that has the knowledge to do so, for it to be around 1400-1600. Got the means to do it yourself? I would. You and a friend could do it in a few days time.

yeah i would love to do it just dont have a clue....ive installed susp lifts and BL...but this is a whole different story....would a 5.4 work?...or is that just to much work

Yeah,,it will work just like the 4.6.
There's a guy on here that put a Lightning motor and trans in his truck that had a V6 to start with.

Heck I know someone who swapped out their 4.2 V6 for an F250's 5.4L...and it was on a mustang.

lol,,That's a tight fit. A 5.4 in a stang but guys are doing it.
He has plenty of room in that F-150 engine bay.

heres another ?.....my engine has been rebuilt but my trans has not....so when my trans goes could a replace it with a trans that would work for the 5.4 and then when my engine goes replace with a 5.4

why would you pay $500 and up to a weeks downtime for an engine that only get ~30 hp more than yours?

if you had a dead 4.2L, i could see this as practical, but if it aint broke, why fix it?

what is the difference with the 5.4 and 4.6 motors? arent they the same except the 5.4 has a longer stroke?

No,
the 5.4 is wider.
That's the mane reason you cant swap intake manifold between the two.

oh.. wouldnt he need the wiring harness too? since he will have 8 cyl. instead of the 6?

why would he need a new tranny harness if it the same 4r70w trans? wouldnt the original one work?

I'm not sure if the 4.2 and 4.6 trannys are the same or even if they have the same bell-housing or not.
The 4.6 he was talking about had a tranny with it.
Now hes thinking about a 5.4...lol
