Charging battery problem

I have a 1997 ford f150 4x4 with a 4.2 that has a battery charging problem I bought a brand new battery in a brand new alternator and still not charging any ideas on why it would not be charging could the starter be doing it I checked all the fuses

Other than guessing, have you done any real troubleshooting?

I would get your charging system tested with a machine -- not with a multi-meter.

In your owner manual page 141, bottom of page, fuse #3 Alternator field fuse.
Located on firewall with Mega fuses.
Check it.

New alternator not charging battery

I have 97 f150 with 5.4. When I change alternators I have to be careful when I pull the 3 wire plug from the back of the old alternator, the green wire specifically. It will actually pull up to the point when you put it on the new alternator it wont get a connection. Therefore not charge the battery. All I do is to look into the business end of the plug and you'll see if any of the 3 terminals have been pulled back. If so just push the affected wire back where its close to the other 2. And carefully plug into the new alternator. Maybe this has helped someone it took me 10 days of chasing a ghost before i found the problem.
