code 0161

I have a 2000 f150 with the small v8, service engine light came on. Got the code 161. Ox sensor bank 2 sensor 2. I understand this is the drivers side, on the cat. Am I correct?

Yes. Driver's side, rear sensor. This does not affect driveability.

Bank2, Sensor2 is the sensor that is after the CAT on the bank that does not contain Cylinder #1. On your Ford engine, Bank1 is on the passenger side (LHD models), so Bank2 is on the left side. Left and right are as seen from sitting in the driver seat looking forward.

P0161 means the heater circuit built into the O2 sensor has failed, either open or shorted. On Cold Engine Start, the heater elements within the O2 Sensors are activated so that the sensors work sooner than they would work if they relied solely on exhaust to heat them up. the deal is, O2 Sensors are very sluggish when cold, so the engineers built in a heater so the sensors come up to operating temp as quickly as possible. Typically, the sensor heaters will be turned on when the SAP is also on, then after a couple of minutes the exhaust stream is hot enough to keep the sensors up to temp, and the heaters and SAP are turned off. There will be no driveabiiity issues associated with a failed O2 Sensor heater element. Your truck will make more smog upon cold engine start, or since it is the post-CAT sensor the computer will not know if the CAT is working efficiently or not. The post-CAT sensor compares the exhaust stream that exits the CAT with the same stream that entered, if there is no significant difference, then you get a code for CAT Efficiency, P0420 or P0430.
