2002 F150 V6 Cylinder Misfire

2002 F150 V6 Cylinder Misfire

Hi all, long time reader thanks for the info. I have a 2002 f150 V6 reading codes P0316 P0306 and P1506

It threw these codes after driving in a heavy rain. I replaced the coil pack about 2 months ago with no problems. Wires/plugs were new about 9 months ago. Is it possible water got in that cylinder? is my best bet to just change the plug for cylinder 6? Thanks

What kind of plugs, wires and coil pack did you use?

It's recommended to use Motorcraft.

Thanks for the help.

Its a Motorcraft coil pack, Belden Premium 8mm wires and im not sure what the plugs are, ill check tomorrow when i pull #6. Sounds like I should be replacing the wires too.

If you didn't use dielectric grease at the plugs and the coil, this can happen in heavy rain where the engine gets wet. Pull everything apart and look for cracks and carbon tracking.

I didnt install the plugs and wires only the coil pack, but i will check everything and i have some dielectric to put on. Thanks, ill check everything later today and report back.

Changed out #6 plug, no difference still throws cylinder 6 misfire. Here is a picture of the old plug. Not sure what to try next, wires looked good. Is it possible my coil pack went bad that fast?

Those are Autolite plugs - not recommended.

Remove the coil pack, clean it off real well, and inspect for tracks and cracks. The wire may *look* good, but that doesn't mean anything. You may want to go buy one plug wire, anything will do as long as you can temporarily connect it to the #6 plug, you can route it over the top shortest way instead of around back in the clips.

I put a motocraft plug in #6 when i changed it, the autolite was done by the shop. I popped off the coil pack, attached picture. my old coil pack, same brand/model didnt have the pink vertical lines going across. Gonna swap to my old one and see what that does.

Zip ties were put on by the shop when they did all new plugs and wires about 8 months ago. I guess to keep the wires secured. Do you think I should I try new wires or a new coil pack?

I recommend replacing the wires and the plugs. Then move from there.

As glc said, Autolites are not good for this engine.

Besides, changing the wires and plugs on this engine are super easy. Everything can be gotten to by regular tools and without much work. I actually like working on this engine in the F150 because there are some spots, I can sit inside the engine compartment and work.

Then again, I'm 120 lbs and 5'3"... lol

No problem.

Just make sure you replace the wires and plugs with Motorcraft parts. Since you already have a MC plug in #6, you just need 5 more for the rest of the cylinders.

You need to examine the top side of the coil pack carefully. Look for cracks and carbon tracks. Look very closely at the area around the #6 terminal.
