New powertrain?

So I have a 1999 4.2l f150 supercab that’s got I think 369xxx miles I’m not sure if the guy replaced the internals before or not but it runs a low compression. I was thinking to upgrade the engine just as a fun little project. My idea is to got to a wreaking yard or by a crate engine of a 5.0L coyote or a 5.2L. What do y’all think?

The 5.0 or the 5.4 or the 4.6 for that matter will not bolt to your V-6 transmission, the old pushrod 5.0 will, but as far as putting a modular V-8 into your truck, especially the 5.0 Coyote, the electronics alone would be a nightmare. It just isn't practical, but with enough time and money anything can be done.

I agree. I'd get a crate 4.2l or rebuild it.

The 4.2l is reliable enough.

Since the keyword is "powertrain" and not engine, I'd be looking for a crate 5.2 Voodoo and a Tremec 6 speed to go with it. Yeah, you'll spend some bucks. Engine alone is about 20 grand and you'll probably have 30 in it before you're finished but there's not much that it won't run away from. Custom programming is not that hard to come by anymore. Be prepared to spend a lot of money on rear tires. It's incredibly addictive.
