The way you describe the action suggest a loss of ground for the dash or loss of power to the dash.
1. If the Dash goes dead while driving but the motor stays running. ' After' starting, the dash has no effect on the motor running.
2. The motor will not start when the dash is out because ...now... the PATS is out as well so the motor will not start and the fuel pump may not run. This is a normal effect as designed for theft protection.
Good luck.

Not to be fallacious, but letting things go has now caught up with you.
There now may be more than one issue present.
Only way is to make repairs.
The speedo functions likely are an issue on the dash circuit board.
The display is driven by a micro processor that gets its info from the engine computer.
The PATS is a stand alone and does not depend on the dash.
That's why you been getting away with it.
Now that there is a power issue that affects both, games are over.
Good luck.

The dash and Pats are not part of the OBDII system so you won't see any codes related to them using a Scanner or Reader.
When the dash is working, access to dash HEC diagnostics are possible for some faults and reading for various functions in the Dash system..
For this you need the HEC Documentation to interpret the displayed data that is in several formats.
Good luck.
