2001 Crew Cab, sounds like sand

Hello All!

I have a 2001 4.6 2wd 120,000 miles. A few weeks ago it started making this grinding sound like sand in bearings from the front of the block. I assumed it was the belt and replaced it. Not the belt. I did discover the tensioner pulley was bad and replaced that. This didn't fix it either. I checked the oil. Holy Crap! Dry as a bone! I filled her up six quarts, turned over the engine, and the sound persists. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thank you!!!

Doesn't sound good. You may be looking at a new engine. Have you found out how all of the oil disappeared?

Update

Previous owner admits to not having EVER changed the oil! Hmmm... (enter colorful phrase of your choice) ...I pulled the alternator and had it tested today. It tested ok. Replaced the battery because a two year old battery is just begging to go anyway... really it's more of a soft whir or a humm... sounds like my neighbors Honda Odysey. I've put 150 interstate miles on it this week. No smoke, no knocks. I put on 40 interstate miles today after filling her up with 10w40. No oil loss. I'd think if the engine was gonna go it would have done so today at 85 mph with half a ton in tow. I'm at a complete loss!!!

Run it with the belt off to eliminate if it's an accessory or internal to the engine.

Don't run it for a long time with the belt off, should be a quick check anyways
