Starting issues. Trying to isolate problem.

2000 xlt ext-cab 4.2l 5 speed 205k miles.
1-I was at a red light when the truck suddenly dies and for 1 or 2 seconds shows horizontal lines (-------) in the odomoter. While the car is dead the rpm needle goes from left to right (max). Can't recall the other ones.
2- Crank the truck and starts at the first time idles good. Went straight to store and bought a fuel pump relay just in case.
3- Went home and replaced the FP Relay.
4- Drove truck for 2 days without any problems.
5- 2 days later car starts and runs like crap could not hold idle. Truck dies.
6- While waiting for tow truck can hear the FP buzz with key in ON position.
7- Get truck towed, got home, truck starts at first try (?)
8- Next 2 days, truck starts , idles good but did not drive it. (raining like hell in NorCal).
9- Next 2 days wont start, can't hear the FP buzzing with key in ON position.
10- Today, truck starts, idles good and drove it around block. (?)
11- Replaced with old FP relay (just in case), starts, idles, and drives ok.
11- Run scan tool for codes. No codes are present.

Replaced fuel pump an filter around 60k miles back (3 yrs). Based on what I paid for the pump (200ish probably is a non Ford product)
Coils and plugs replaced @ 125k miles
Replaced some worn out hoses while replacing FP.
Any ideas? what is ready to go bust
Thanks in advance.

Have you cleaned the cable connections to and from the battery?

I've had SEVERAL bad batteries from Discount Auto Parts that would fail like that. No rough idle but would be sitting at a red light and running fine and the battery (and the engine) would just DIE. Usually after sitting for some time they would just start working again. After about eight batteries failing like that, I will no longer buy any battery MADE by Johnson Controls regardless of the brand name on the battery.

My advice is just change the battery, it's cheaper than a diagnostic fee. (Super Walmart has a 1 year guaranteed battery for $48).

Battery connections are good and clean. Battery 1 year old (Interstate). Drove the car 50 yards and died. Going to check fuel pressure.

With the engine running a battery cannot cause the engine stall.
Why, the alternator is outputting the power to supply all systems regardless of the battery condition.
The alternator supplies power to the computer, dash and other function.
You have an open circuit condition going on with main power feed to the computer , dash and other functions.
First place to check out and not just look is the fuse seating of 103, 111, 113.
These are main power to different section that if any fail the motor will shut down.
A failed fueled fuel pump will not cause dashed lines on the dash or even an open battery condition while the motor is running.
A failed charge system will not cause same as the battery will then supply the power at some reduced voltage but still keep all system operating.
Good luck.
