2001 F150 XLT starting issues

Hey guys, I have a 2001 F150 XLT Supercrew cab with the 4.6L Triton V8. I'm having issues with it starting. It won't crank in park or neutral but after shifting back and forth between park and neutral a few times and trying to start it occasionally it will finally start. Any ideas on what might be wrong? Also, I have noticed that once it starts it seems to struggle getting into drive. I'll put it into drive and I can feel the shifter it's self lock into place in the collum but the tranny doesn't seem to want to go into drive. I would appreciate any ideas greatly.

1st thought was that the Safety Neutral switch was funky....but I would check to see if the bolts to the steering column are tight , they too have been known to work loose. ( under the dash)

Might be that your shift linkage cable is all stretched out or a bracket that secures it is broken?

Thank you lots! I checked the torque screws under the dash and they were a little loose so I tightened them down and it seems to be starting like it should but it's still struggling to go into drive.

It's still a bit out of alignment.
