4.6 pi swap or 5.4 swap

Alright, I have a 1998 ford f150 nascar edition. It's a 4.6L romeo npi. I want to make it into a street truck. Nothing tooo crazy that'll break my bank but decent power to hold my own on street light races. What would be more worth it? The Pi head swap or just swap it with a newer 5.4pi motor? And if I get a 5.4 how new of a year model could I use? Is one out of a 2005 f150 fine? I understand that with the pi head swap, i need to get the heads, intake, exhaust intake (please fill me in on whatever else I need for the Pi head swap). I plan on supercharging both options. I tried doing my research and I just can't decide which is more worth it. Thanks!

There is one hell of a writeup on the 5.4 swap on here, shows which years come with PI heads, etc etc. https://www.f150online.com/forums/ar...wap-notes.html read through there, will give good grasp at things.. I'm going from 4.6 to 5.4 PI supercharged. Doesn't look too bad, pre-planning seems key though.

Oh, and the 5.4 will have more low end torque and such, will help move these beasts off the line. Gears and such will help also, but figure that out once a game plan is written. I recommend building the bottom end of any engine that plans to be boosted. I plan to use scat rods, arp bolts, arp studs, etc etc. Head work is easier later on than the block is. Then comes transmission, stalls, compression ratios, etc etc.. Fun fun.

No, that's a 3 valve. Stick with a 2 valve 5.4.

I've also came across some ideas of putting the new 5.0 coyote swap. I'm actually willing to spend the money for the whole swap and everything. I'd be doing all the work myself. Any opinions on this swap? the good and the bad.

The coyote as we all know is a terrific mill. My opinions are as follows: I would recommend buying a wrecked truck and swap the motor and tranny. The wiring is the challenge. Fords control pack is pricey and currently will only work on manual transmission applications. If you are a whiz you could use the ecm from the wreck. An alternative may be to use a 5.4 short block and tranny and use the TFS heads. Power would be similar. Let us know what you are planning I am in the same boat with an 05 and an ill 4.6.

3 Valve V10. More torque than the Lightning.

A 5.4 swap is very intense.

I just did a TFS PI head swap on my '98 NPI 4.6L. Also added shorty headers and flowmaster catted pipe and Magnaflow cat back exhaust. Huge difference!! Like added +70HP. Used a 4.6L PI upper and lower intake manifold (lower with flapper valve). Reused the NPI cams. Works well.
