I have ~420k miles on my 98, approx 320k on the engine alone. I use 6.5qts of SuperTech (Wal-Mart oil) 5W-20 with a Motorcraft FL400S filter and nothing else. I burn about a qt every 5k miles.

Yes, never use any oil besides 5w-20 in these things. Got a nasty rattle when put otherwise, and that oil was black as night only after 3500 miles.

I've got 179,000 on mine, and shall never again use anything else but 5w-20.

Too much, the 4.2 takes 6 quarts with filter change, it should bring the oil up to right around the middle of the hashmarks between the ADD and FULL line.

I see you post that, and a lot of people quote the 5.4L as taking 6qts as well, but my truck likes 6.5qts. I remember you starting a thread years ago on the FPN for the oil dipstick as some are different, but 6.0 puts me at the tip, 6.5 right in the middle.

The factory specifies 6 quarts - any more is technically overfilling it regardless of what the dipstick says.

From what I heard, car engines will froth the oil and the air/oil mix will lead to inadequate oil coverage.

As for my airplane's 320ci engine, she will blow out anything over 8qts. Picky things, those engines.
