1997 f150 cruise help

Hello everyone, I have a question about my cruise control not working and i'm doing the diagnoses myself using Mitchel on demand. It tells me that if my voltage is greater than 10 volts at the ON switch pressed, to replace the switch, so i've replaced it with 4 different (used) ones with the same result...is this a common issue with them??? I really dont want to buy a new one, because ford dealership here wants to charge me almost $300 for the piece of plastic...

Go check the pressure switch (and the fused harness) on the brake master cylinder.

If the switch wasn't leaking at the time you had the recall done, they would have just installed the harness. This usually means that the switch will eventually fail disabling cruise control.

If the CC pressure switch on the MC is leaking, would this cause CC to not work. My 97 cruise hasn't worked for a couple of years. My "Brake" warning light came on this moring and when I checked fluid level, I noticed the pressue switch was "soaked" in brake fluid.

YES! This is also a fire hazard, hence the recall. If the recall has been done, you probably have a blown fuse in the recall harness. Go get a new improved switch and harness.

Tks a lot. I called my Ford Dealership and there are actually 3 recalls on this. The service mgr is to call me back as to which and what one I need and when it can be done. I'm glad my brake warning light came on, otherwise, I would never have found this info.

My previous visit solved my towing package brake/turning light not working on either of my trailers.

Thanks again, Tom

For 20 bucks, fix it yourself. Takes 5 minutes.

Turns out that I had the CC pressure switch recall done several years ago. So, I used the address you provided earlier and have ordered the kit which is to be here Tues. $20.68 for the kit. Between my '70 Mustang Convertible and '97 F-150, it seems I'm going to become a mechanic of sorts.

Thanks for your help.

If the recall has been done, I'm betting that the inline fuse is blown in the harness. All Ford did was replace the factory harness with one with a fuse, they didn't replace the switch unless it was already leaking. When the switch starts to leak, it shorts out the harness causing fires, which is why they put a fuse in it.

Be glad you don't own an 89-95 SHO. Those things have been making mechanics out of drivers since 1989!

That makes sense. I've always thought there was a fuse somewhere not listed in manual. I vaguely remember my dealer changed something under the hood and it didn't take but a couple of minutes. At that time, I was more concerned about having to take my almost new truck in for a recall (I bought truck new in Feb '96) My cruise quit on me abt 2 yrs ago, so, the recall saved me from a fire, as you suspect, the fuse must have done it's job. My truck came with factory towing package and Ford added a 2 fuse, 5a and 20a, small fuse box on the fender well just behind the two fuse boxes under the hood. It's not in the owners manual.

Thanks again for your help.

The cruise recall didn't occur until 2005, your 1997 truck would have been about 8 years old at the time.

I couldn't remember when the recall was but I did take it in to have it done. In 4 months I will have had the F-150 20 years. I'm now 76 yrs old and 8 years isn't a very long period of time, the way time is now flying by. I really appreciate all the information I've found on this forum. I enjoy tinkering with small jobs on my cars and truck. My truck is red, ext cab w/3rd door, 4x4, equa-lok, ps, pb, cc, at, pw, am/fm tape, 4.6 liter. Only problems I've had over the years have been plug wires and each of the 2 distributors, blown towing pkg fuse and cruise control. Now, when my kit come in, I'll be able to repair that. Oh yes, I've had to clean the windshield washer pump filter twice. It now has 121 K miles or just getting broken in. LOL

Thanks to you guys for info you have posted and questions you have answered.

Yea!, now my cc works on my '97 F-150. The part came late yesterday and I changed it out this morning. Had to take a little drive using cruise and thought about how great F-150 Online is. This make two (2) problems solved by what is posted on this forum.

Thanks guys,

Tom
